AHAHAHA
i remember that!
god, what a terrible idea. like i said, enough of garrett. his story is over.
if you ask me, the protagonist of thief 4 oughta be female, and not made to wear skimpy or overly tight clothing.

Considering Thief 3 is said to have not even broke even in sales, it's a little more than a long shot that we'll ever see a Thief 4. From everything I've read, Thief 1 and 2 made a profit, and Thief 3 didn't. Not sure how many companies are going to stick their necks out to make another one after that.

It stuns me that somebody at Ion Storm actually thought that this would be good for the Thief series, cool even. When I heard Ion Storm was making the game originally, I thought they were the perfect fit...little did I realize just how out of touch they really were.

this game was canceled before it was any more than concept art: and Thank God for that.
It was going to be a shooter ..... toldjaso.
Seconded on the thanking God part.

I can see that we're going to have to do some intervention here. The man is clearly in his own little world of denial and cockeyed optimism.

It's really hard to say. There is this thing called "post mortem", some publishers actually use it. The corporate culture differs from company to company - some are vision-driven, and some are marketoid-driven. Although I'm afraid Eidos seems to belong to the latter category.
By the way, it's intriguing how sales&PR departments seem to attract all kinds of loosers, crooks and slackers (not that there are no honest sales people, it's just that they keep bad company).

Don't be so harsh on them. Sometimes it's hard to imagine, how much damage can one wrong person in a wrong place cause. An incompetent executive producer, for example, if given too much power, can send all your team's hard work and talent to the gutter with just one hour of bad decision making per week.

Fixed. :cheeky:

Decision not to publish the game at all counts as "putting it on a shelf". :)

What's that thing in his hand? Oh, it's a gun, how modern and trite.
Zillameth on 3/8/2007 at 16:40
Maybe it shoots water crystals.
New Horizon on 3/8/2007 at 16:52
What really bothers me about that concept art is how the gun completely changes the tone of the character.
Yes, Garrett is a Thief in the original games...but the setting and tools of the trade seem to soften edges and allow for him to be a 'good guy', regardless of his night time activities. I look at that thug with the gun and it feels more like Hitman or Splinter Cell. It takes on the tone of 'Murderer' more than a tone of 'Thief'.

Yes, the transition from medieval to modern setting turns the whole context and subtext upside down. They probably should have given him some kind of cyberpunkish dartgun.
But it's just a quick concept art, and if I recall correctly, it was made by an external artist. That's way too little to build assumptions on.
On the other hand, the artist was correct. That's how a modern Garrett would probably look like. These are comfortable clothes you wear when you need to move quickly, don't want to stand out from the crowd, don't want to get soaked in rain, and don't want your face memorized. The choice of colours is obvious. Sports bag is a natural choice, if you need quick access to the contents (although I think backpack would be better anyway). A small weapon is easy to hide.
Of course, it just might be a parody. :sly:
