And is his elbow supposed to be bionic, or is that just a pattern in the material of the jacket?

Looks like a slotted gadget to me.

On the other hand, the artist was correct. That's how a modern Garrett would probably look like.
I disagree. I know I've posted this pic before, but I still think that a modern-day professional thief would have gear similar to what DeNiro is wearing. Guns would be optional and for self-defense
only. I agree with NH; the concept art character looks like a thug, not a thief.

That's a very appealing image. If only I hadn't seen that Mythbusters episode about thievery last week... :)
Seriously, though - people, get real, Garrett is a "thug", not some fancy sneaky Tom Clancy's superagent. This is "dark" fiction", not the "heroic" variety. Garrett picks pockets. He assaults people. He shoots them. He has a bow - that's basically a tool for killing things! He breaks into shops and rich people's homes for a living. He can barely pay his rent. When he got into that bank vault, he stole one deposit, because he had the key to it. He survives, because he's inconspicuous - how do you imagine walking down a street with gear like that?
The real problem is that when you see "medieval" Garrett, your subconcious tells you "Robin Hood". There's no modern Robin Hood, so a guy who looks like a thug is just that. You have to get over it, unless you just want another "Splinter Cell".

What really bothers me about that concept art is how the gun completely changes the tone of the character.
Yes, Garrett is a Thief in the original games...but the setting and tools of the trade seem to soften edges and allow for him to be a 'good guy', regardless of his night time activities. I look at that thug with the gun and it feels more like Hitman or Splinter Cell. It takes on the tone of 'Murderer' more than a tone of 'Thief'.
Bleh
Pretty much what I think

I'll concede that you do have a point; I'm so used to all the weapons Garrett
does have and that he
does pickpocket people that I don't even think about it. Yet he's still considered a 'Master Thief'. I still can't think of Garrett as a thug, no matter what. Maybe my interpretation of the word differs (
'Definition: 1. brutal person: somebody, especially a criminal, who is brutal and violent'), but thugs aren't usually considered reluctant heroes in any respect of the term. Garrett's character is; face it - he saves the day in each one of the Thief games no matter how much he wants to tell the world to f* off. To my knowledge thugs don't save the world. Unless of course you choose to play Thief in a way that your Garrett
is a violent and brutal person.
There is one FM scenario that I thought perfectly plausible and that was in 'Snobs', where Garrett has successfully retired and is rather wealthy. That would be more feasible to me than if his character just continued living in cheap hotel rooms and picking pockets til he dropped dead of old age or illness. Afterall, how many times does Garrett state that his goal is to retire wealthy (it's our FMs that keep him broke & poor just so we can enjoy more Thief)? The writers didn't make Garrett sound like a gutter snipe/thug, either. When you hear his dialogue he sounds relatively intelligent (I know, I know, probably the Keepers' influence) and quite literate. Qualities one doesn't usually associate with thugs.
And in the 'modern' version of the imagined T4, I doubt Garrett would be walking down the street looking like the concept art character; I rather think he'd look like DeNiro's character looked when not performing a heist. (Imo, because that's how I'd want him to look and this is all speculation anyhow. :p )

Wrong: it's darn near certain that there won't be a Thief 4, so there's no reason for me to get over anything.
Eidos took a beating with TDS, so why in hell would they bother with a Thief 4?
poison_the_well on 3/8/2007 at 23:09
edios will sell thief rights once a company wants to make thief 4,and since edios took a beating on thief 3 i dont see why they wont sell the rights cheap"kinda a good ridance to bad profits"
thief 4 will be made and dewdrop will be involved, that is my postion
my prediction is it will come out in 2012
jtr7 on 3/8/2007 at 23:17
The year 2012, eh? Maybe they could work in some plotline about the Mayan Calendar and the "end of the world as we know it," which is a part of Thief, anyway.
poison_the_well on 3/8/2007 at 23:32
that is a great idea jtr7,seriously

Thaaats not riiiiight, haven't you ever played Fallout? :cheeky: The world "ends" in 2077, not 2012. Besides, we gotta have time to develop flying cars, lol. If flying cars don't exist by the time the world ends, I am going to be seriously pissed off.
Oh, more on-topic, there is a chance T4 will be, but its slim at best, kinda like a NoX 2, Ultima X, or Ultima Underworld III. Sooooo many great games that deserve sequels or at least more of a legacy, but haven't gotten one... So sad... Personally, if there were a Thief 4, I'd gladly pay $50 for it, because, damn it, I LOVE STEALING THINGS!!
