just to keep this in the minds of those who may be able to reason out the problem, why does Thief.exe crash, but the game run and render fine through Dromed?

Does the shortcut have the 'working directory' set ?
If it is not set or you try to launch the Thief-exe from another directory then the install-folder, it will crash.

OK gnartsch! You're on to something good I think! When I started Thief2 from the exe in the program folder, it ran and rendered fine.
I just created a shortcut from there and dragged it to my desktop. It almost crashed, but ran without the decals showing at the beginning, so I know the rendering problem is throughout.
So please tell me, what steps do I take to get a well running shortcut on my desktop?

The easiest way would be as follows:
Rightclick on Thief2.exe (keep the right button pushed) and drag it to some random place
(to the desktop or to some blank spot in the folder).
Release the right button and Windows will show a menu, where you can choose 'Create shortcut here'.
Like this for sure the 'Working folder' will be set as well.
Now you can move the new shortcut whereever you want it to be (e.g. to the Desktop)
As an alternative: rightclick the shortcut you had already and select 'Properties'.
Not sure if this looks all the same for all Windows versions, but below the line that shows the name & path to Thief2.exe (e.g. E:\Games\Thief2\Thief2.exe)
there should be a line reading like 'Execute in' or 'Work directory'.
Make sure that the path to the install dir is shown there (e.g. E:\Games\Thief2)

Not sure if it was just a fluke, or if it was because I loaded the game just previously in Dromed, but running direct from the folder makes no difference once again. Only Dromed renders properly. Man, this is getting old...

Somebody on the german forums got the same problem: DromEd worked, T2 didn't or rendered badly.
So she changed the settings of her video card (Radeon HD 4200)
Quote:
Standard Settings: Use custom settings
Anti-Aliasing: Level 4x, Filter Wide-tent (8x)
Adaptive Anti-Aliasing: Enable Adaptive Anti-Aliasing
Anisotropic Filtering: 16x
Minimap Detaillevel: Performance (2.Position)
It worked

I've looked around but kind find where those settings are.
