I remember one cool FM, witch used Orbs as security cameras, they where placed in corridors and player could take a look at the cameras visual from a security station or something... but no, I never used them actually in OM's, except when ghosting without saves. :D

Says the guy who can't even beat T2 levels when he's using a walkthrough. Clearly a qualified judge.

Apart from watching dancing zombies and it functioning as a mirror, it really is quite useless.
Oh, and it stops your fall.
How can it be useless if it lets you watch dancing zombies?

I completely agree.
That would have been excellent! It would have been like a reverse pocket-picking - a pocket-
planting!
Is that a scouting orb in your pocket or...?

It also comes in handy when there is a shaft you may consider entering. Drop the orb and it can save your butt at times.
It's not useless, but it's not a "can't live without" item.

I've finally found it useful in 'Life of the Party'
I threw it up into open windows and/or up on guard towers to see which way an NPC was facing/patrol pattern.

yeah but it would have been great if you could place the damn thing,in a strategic place somewhere, and click back to it anytime you liked...rather than being a useless make-up handbag mirror.:)

I much prefer the "use it like a mirror" idea. Granted the semi-modern technology of the Ord Garrett's Eye connection wireless transmission does seem to function as a stationary security camera, the use it then retrieve it for re-use is more in keeping with the equipment of a Thief.
Retrievable equipment, Rope arrows, mines, orbs, noisemakers, for example is to be expected. Thieves usually don't carry "disposable" gear. Other than explosives and the like, the gear is designed to be kept and reused.
In addition to which, the plant it and leave it but monitor it smacks of third person view which SUCKS the big one.

From the dev quotes:
Quote:
Emil: 'You WERE trying to look up her skirt.'
Dan K.: 'Well, I just wanted to see if it could be done. You have to throw the remote camera just right so it goes under their phys models, but it slides too far, and the noise alerts them and then they move around... it's really tough.

Helpful Tip: Drop the Orb, don't throw it. :eww:
