Beware, there might be spoilers !Seriously, in every incarnation of Garrett's suit, you can notice it includes minor leg and arm guards and some sort of light leather armour somewhat similar to the one worn by wealthier archers in medieval militaries. The suit is different in all three games :
TDP features an early version, that is pretty bulky in appearance and mostly blue-gray and brown in colour. The leather chest-and-shoulder-piece also seems to be reinforced by additional tiny metal plates or scales woven into it.
TMA has the most bluntly coloured one, preferring green, cyan, dark purplish blue and brass-like orange/gold. It's also a lot more lighter looking outfit and is usualy unrevealed in cutscenes or concept art (the only real glimpses of it come via Garrett seeing himself threw a scouting orb).
TDS marks the return to more monolithic and darker colours, resembling the one from TDP, except for brown. The chest-and-shoulder-piece seems less rigid than in the previous games, apparently to allow better mobility (albeit for the price of sacrificing some of the armour). The hood and arm guards remain practically the same and leg guards are easily visible during the "Garrett on Keeper trial" cutscene. The bulky boots from TDP are replaced with more subtle, though still hardy footwear, similar to the one from TMA. All in all, the TDS suit could be sumed up as a more lightly built and enhanced version of the TDP one. (P.S. I'm talking about the upgraded suit from the Texture Pack for TDS, which I regard the real and definite version - the original sleeveless one was laughable... ;))

It could also be to protect him from the sorts of bumps and scrapes he'd get from climbing over walls and squeezing through narrow passages.

Of course. I'm sure Beleg could tell us more regarding the level of realism in the armour's design.

None. :p Seriously, having a piece of thick leather on your skin protects you only from a panicking servant hurling a knife. You can try that if you like. Even the vambraces used by archers and excessively in the LotR movies do either not provide serious safety or are – in the case of archers – not urgent. The medieval illustrations of practising bowmen I recall show only a leather patch at the size of a smaller computer mouse; personally I shoot with a small horse bow and without anything on the left hand except for a self-made fingerless glove to keep the feathers from scratching my skin – that's in fact a pain to consider.
Usually everything about Garrett's "armour" is fantasy. The T1/2 vambraces are OK but practically useless (I kind of like it, though, since they're the only real "armour" there except for the collar and (
http://www.thief-thecircle.com/media/concepts/showimage.asp?source=./t2-sketch-garrett1.jpg) this sort of plate on his hand), the TDS leather pads are ridiculous (more than body awareness, haha), collars/shoulder guards are... well, flap a piece of cardboard around your shoulder and try to raise your arm like doing pull-ups. Garrett is a thief, so he should have little clumbersomely equipment and sturdy clothes without any gadgets.

The "armour" Garrett wears in DS isn't even armour, more like augmented and hardened leather/textile cloths - which, by the way, is the most realistic approach. A thief needs mobility and flexiblity, not strength and defence. If Garrett needs to fight, he's screwed, and that pathetic armour of his won't save his skin, which is nice and proper.
On the note of stealth, though, things are different. The DS garb is full of buckles, which, for the Builder's sake, shine and twinkle. Plus the fact that they made his eye "burn"... :tsktsk:
I really think that the best is MA's armour.

Or none, really. TDS followed that kind of super agent look with hidden secrets all over the place...erm... suit. The TDS guards had the same kind of oversturdiasation with too many buckles etc., but that's not part of the topic (yet).

Hehe, how true ! :)
But I wonder... What if the Mechanists discovered primitive Kevlar ? (Well hey, they had diving suits, so why not Kevlar ? ;)) I think Garrett (along with the cops and other thieves) would immediately become interested... :laff: (Though yeah, Kevlar maybe is powerful, but it can't last for long - or too many shots...)
