Awesome, thanks for the link. I was replaying Doom 3 straight before my PC broke and was disappointed by the ugly low res textures. 896MB of VRAM FTW!

Am I the only one who usually finds "high res" textures looking like "regular res" textures with a shitton of noise filter on them?

LOL @ Doom 3 having low res textures.
It's a six year old game?
LOL @ Wolfenstein 3D for having low res textures.

The original textures look much better to me.

That's.... exactly what I thought. Ok, so maybe they are a bit improved, but really, it's all about the noise.

The bizarre thing about this is that, IIRC (based on interviews I read at the time), everything in Doom 3 was modelled in 3D, and the textures and normal maps were then generated from that.
If that's correct, then it seems to me that you could probably generate higher quality textures by re-visiting the original resources. Not that these people have those, but if they're that desperate to do this then maybe they could talk to Id about it.

Well, it just turned 5, but who's counting...

If you have normalmaps without any sort of parallax shaders slapped alongside them, a bit of added noise is a great way to make them stand out and look crisp and defined.
There comes a point, though. Too much of a good thing and all that. The guy above doesn't quite go overboard, but his toe is right on the line.
