Of course. I was merely arguing the hypothetical scenario.
Then I suppose you can see my reasoning as to why that's a Bad Idea?

If you had a mix of fixed (reliable) ammo dumps, dynamic ammo dumps and dynamic AI for difficulty levels you could nail it. What is wrong with adapting to how a player is doing? Lots of games have tried it and been lauded for it. Heck, even Mortal Kombat had this iirc. The last thing you want is the end of Far Cry.

Came across this a few hours ago:

During an interview with Shacknews, id Software president John Carmack described Doom 4 as being "significantly different" than Doom 3.
When asked whether the game will be rooted in the horror genre, Carmack indicated that it will instead focus more on pure action elements a la Doom 2...Carmack explained that he found some of the complaints of Doom 3's brand of horror to be "completely valid," saying that the "contrived nature of monsters hiding in a closet" and the extreme darkness were two things that caused the company to cancel its game Darkness and begin production of Rage.
I get the feeling that since Doom 3 was a remake of the original Doom, Doom 4 is going to be a remake of Doom 2. If true, then Doom 4
must have a double-barrel shotgun. :ebil:

Well that's cool I guess, if your one of the fans who prefers run and gun and not horror and scares. (Not that I don't enjoy doom 1 and 2 to this day, however...)
If it's not going to be a horror title then to me that sucks.:erg: That's just my opinion. Like I read in an issue of GameInformer magazine talking about writing (storyline and whatever) in terms of video game development, back in the 90's story was almost none existant and the technical limitations back then obviously limited what could be done... So in doom's case, they put the story on the backburner, and instead went with here's a gun, shoot stuff. Nowadays though, it's almost laughable when games don't have any sort of real storyline. That's why I think if doom 4 was modeled after doom 2, it would please the hardcore fans, but for people like me who want new content we will be dissapointed somewhat.

I do enjoy a good game of Doom 1 and 2, but I've never really played 3. The excerpts I posted never said anything about not having a plot line, only that the game was going to be more action oriented. We also know that iD is targeting 30 Hz for Doom 4, so it can't be that huge or fast paced. Ultimately, sNeaksieGarrett, this is iD we are talking about; do you honestly expect them to create a compelling narrative yarn for Doom 4?

It's hard to be scared when you're a space marine in power armor with a chaingun. I found that rather than being tensely afraid of the shadows and monsters, I would predict exactly where the enemies were going to spawn and leap at me, got pissed at my inability to see anything in the darkness, and wondered if there is anywhere on Mars with a single fucking roll of duct tape.
In my opinion, of course, Doom 3 failed as a horror game. I'm glad to see that they're returning to what the Doom series is known for.

Oh god DAMMIT. I was hoping they'd learn their lesson- they did, and went completely the opposite direction I was hoping they would. Fuck.
Well, I'll still play it, but Jesus Christ is it any wonder why I find myself playing fewer and fewer FPS games these days?
The_Raven on 2/8/2008 at 02:59
Where were you hoping they'd go?
june gloom on 2/8/2008 at 03:20
I was HOPING they'd go and make the System Shock clone Doom 3 so badly wanted to be- and what classic Doom was GOING to be before Carmack decided story in games was unneccessary.
After Bioshock I was hoping for this even more. I guess I keep forgetting that this is id we're talking about.

Yes, but to me this hints at the possibility of story becoming backburner yet again... And the way Carmack worded that, it sounds to me like it could be very similar to doom 2 (of course this is only speculation now) which was not scary at all... See, what I was trying to get at is that if you're going to have monsters, it's almost certainly a horror game, so reverting back to doom 1 and 2 gameplay mechanics makes it more or less another generic FPS game. Again, not dissing doom 1 and 2. I love them just as much (if not more than doom 3!) but they deserve their own little corner imo. Doom 4 needs to be scary or why even have monsters? Why not just slap some generic baddies in there and call it a game?:laff: My idea of scary isn't hordes of monsters running at you, because there's no scare tactics... Doom 3 was scary (well, at least in my opinion going through it the first time & especially if u are alone in the dark - but after that I agree that doom 3 really wasn't much of a scary game due to the way monsters spawn and the predictability...) in comparison to doom 1 and 2.
Btw, what did you mean by 30 hz? 30 hertz?
In another note: Yeah, I guess I see your point... Come to think of it, all id games I've played have thin storylines. Well, not
all of them, but most of them.

Haha, I guess you're right there... I mean, the game Penumbra was a lot more scary than doom 3 since you couldn't defend yourself hardly. I guess different strokes for different folks. I suppose a souped up doom 1 in id tech 4 or 5 would be pretty cool. :cheeky:
Going off topic for a moment:
This whole Rage thing is bizarre... Mixing racing with FPS? I don't know much about it, but I watched some video of it (I think it was from E3) where carmack talked about it
