Random thought: Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay was Doom 3 done right.

I'd have to agree with dethtoll (unless Doom 3 done right means "just like the first two Doom titles, just with better graphics", which is a point of view I understand, even though I don't share it). Escape from Butcher Bay is a very different beast from Doom 3. The biggest similarity is the plasticky look IMO.

Seconded of dethtolls comment

Chronicles of Riddick was a dark sci-fi FPS about being trapped in a similarly designed environment with similar looks and similar play style. Riddick just did it better. Better guns, better AI, better feel, better pacing, better level design, better character interaction during "down times", better, faster base engine...
The only similarities between System Shock 2 and Doom 3 are audio logs and the occasional ghost-type phenomenon. They don't feel remotely similar in play.

No, Lemming, but both them have you as essentially the sole survivor in a Sci-Fi horror setting.

It's more than just setting. It's feel, it's gameplay purpose. Doom 3 is a corridor shooter. Chronicles of Riddick is a corridor shooter (though less so than Doom 3). System Shock is open ended with a non-linear play environment, with progress that sort of spirals around itself.
System Shock also further differentiates itself with RPG and adventure elements, and also simply by virtue of being an older game. Doom 3 and Chronicles of Riddick compete for the same audience, essentially. SS doesn't.

I haven't played Riddick (because I can't find a new copy in the UK) so I cannot really make comment. I have played Doom3 and SS2. For all Doom3s faults it does what it sets out to very well. It most certainly has that SS2 "survivor" flavour though. Isn't saying Doom3 and Riddick are similar because they are corridor shooters like saying they are also like Half Life?
