It'll be leaked.

So much for the hype. As confirmed (
http://bethsoft.com/en-us/news/the-next-doom-at-quakecon)
on Bethsoft, we won't see anything from the game until 2015. Great move. After 6 years of nothing they still feel comfortable with pointlessly teasing people 7+ months before actually showing anything.

Brutal Doom all over again. Barf.
Didn't hold high hopes for it anyway.
EDIT: After finding out more about it (got a man on the inside at QuakeCon), maybe the Brutal Doom comparison was premature. Saw "melee finishers" and turned off at that point.
Looks like they're trying a bit harder than I thought to reconnect with the spirit of the original Dooms, shunning most of the more ubiquitous CoD features seen in modern games (no sprinting, iron sights, regenerating health or weapon carry limit), and they've even gone so far as to incorporate many of the original game's sound effects into its soundscape.
Unless I see some impressive gameplay in a Twitch stream when it comes out, though, I'm still not going to buy it.

Then a big fat demon. Super slow, but has multiple projectile attacks. Kill it by ripping out the pustule in its stomach and shoving it down its own mouth, causing it to explode into a pile of lard and entrails. Somewhere, the concept of pacifism weeps.
Haha, this sounds alright! :D

I'm not sure I want to be a gamer anymore.
And was that Captain Spandex at 1.55 in?

I attend Quakecon each year and so saw the Doom reveal. I was very excited to finally see the game, and my reaction is that it looks like some good fun, but it doesn't have me crazy excited.
My kind of a new Doom game would be extremely retro, with keycards, large abstract environments, and perhaps even the gun at the bottom-center of the screen. Maybe even cartoony or cel-shaded graphics. So the actual new Doom is not my dream Doom reboot, but still looks okay.
The two things that stood out to me the most were the violent, brutal melee finishers and chainsaw animations; and that the shooting looks Rage-esque. Of course Doom's base is the same tech. as Rage's, and just as all Quake 3-engine games felt like they were made with Quake 3 tech., Doom's shooting looks like it will feel like Rage's.
I will also say that I did not like the design of the Imps too much. I assume that what I saw were Imps as they were plentiful and seemed to throw fireballs; they looked more like mutants and less like demons. The Revenant and Mancubus looked like what you'd expect. Some of the last enemies fought reminded me a lot of Doom 3's Hell Knight. And the final enemy to appear, roaring in the players' face right before the second demo ended, looked like this reboot's Baron of Hell.
The progression of the game seemed a lot more linear like Doom 3's, and less labyrinthine like Doom and Doom II's. There were interior and exterior sections; weapons used were the Shotgun, Super Shotgun, Plasma Gun, Rocket Launcher, and Chainsaw, which all had nice introductions as the player first pulled them out; and there was never a keycard used.
Brutal violence and tons of shooting are definitely part of the Doom experience, though I'd enjoy a Doom reboot more if those were partnered with abstract maze environments. And as I said earlier, I'd like a cartoony, retro look too. But I've only seen a small bit of the game, and so of course realize the final game may be more than what I now expect.

Man, facebook has killed my brain - whenever I have this thread open in Chrome, I feel like I have 4 notifications.

I couldn't agree more. For me a big part of the first two Dooms were the abstract levels with keycards, not to mention puzzle-ish secrets (you had more of those in Doom2, like in the map Suburbs). And of course making my own levels I could share with friends.

thank you for the insight...unfortunately it feels like that kind of level design is long gone. "retro" or "oldschool" shooters as they're called today are much more in the vein of serious sam (not really much of a retro shooter...it being a few months younger than Halo 1.) That kind of game is well and good and all, but DOOM is a different style of shooter entirely!! It's really arcadey in the best sense, its controls. Environments feel frantic and dodging oriented and I loved that. Weird experimental game play with jumping by launching yourself off of a flat surface to another flat surface by just running, stuff like that that just feels obscure but was an intended mechanic.
That and the level design that key card sniffing out encouraged. I think the closest we get to games like that is Quake, the modding scene has churned out plenty, although they're definitely NOT like DOOM...seems like it's the closest we can get, though. :(
