Yup, that's obviously what it's supposed to be emulating, but the thing about modern games is that they're no longer abstracting that, mostly for the sake of realism - ADS is an action that slows down your movement and takes a button click plus the amount of time needed to sight and target, which old FPSes didn't model because it got in the way of shooting stuff at an even pace. That's why the weapon floats in the centre of the screen, which was practical from a game design POV, but doesn't really speak to how guns are actually handled.

I actually like the centered weapons update although it does feel really weird at first. Sure its unrealistic but in a game where you can carry multiple weapons without having to reload all while running full speed it seems to be a non issue. I think part of what I like is the old shotgun reload animation is back and the weapons seem to take up less of the screen than they do in the default placement where the gun is placed in the corner of your screen. I still haven't played through much of the game other than a chapter with the centered weapons option so maybe I'd feel different about it once the novelty wore off.

Which brings me to the most surprising thing about this game: everything about it is clearly designed around movement, and it's always easy to parse the level architecture in terms of how you can use it when there's a mob tearing at you. Plus just moving around is a joy when everything about it is so pleasingly tactile, and the enemy/encounter design is so pacey and compelling. I also didn't realise playing the game ate up so much of my day, which is a sign it's doing a lot of things very right.
I've only played it a couple of hours but I agree with this completely. The fluidity of movement and the feel of the combat is spot on and makes you feel in control probably more than is justified. The only downside is the "locked in arenas" that definitely existed in the original game(s) but feel a little artificial here. It feels a bit like the same structure as painkiller which put me off that game initially but I came to enjoy it and it's not spoiling the game overall. From some of the comments here it sounds like that continues throughout the game but there's enough enjoyment to keep me at it.

I've had a break at the last trip into hell because I got a bit of arena battle overload. I'll get back to it when I want to shoot up some more demons but I haven't felt anxious to finish the game off or replay. I'm more likely to play about with snapmap a bit.

Here's a pretty good 3-part documentary about the making of the new DOOM. The first part also includes a bit of never-before-seen footage of the canceled Doom 4 game from a few years back.

Personally, I'm getting close to the end of the game, I believe the current level is about retrieving the crucible, and while it's been great so far, it's starting to wear out it's welcome. Ready for it to be over soon. I'm surprised by how interesting the lore is getting though. The part where you first start hearing the backstory of the Doomslayer is when my interest was piqued, and I've been paying more attention to the logs since.

That game keeps slowly growing. It started off at around 45GB, and has now gone up to 76GB with the constant patches.
Somewhat annoying since all they seem to add is multiplayer stuff, which I have no interest in?
I had kept it installed because I was hoping someone might manage to make some decent singleplayer maps with Snapmap, but sadly I only ever found rubbish in there (the lack of proper search didn't help), plus Snapmap is somehow a different game that doesn't have any settings, so you're stuck with silly things like damage numbers and highlights and have no option to turn them off.

...well, I used it once. Also, I should've made that jump.

If that's the Steam controller in action, that's impressive.
