I've briefly tried Stronghold. I played the "beta" version too, before the final came out. It's basically an invasion style wad with a home base where you can talk to NPCs and I think even buy equipment. You start out doing the training mission, which is a small little area next to the home base where holograms attack you.
So
that's Chimpy. Heh, sorry. I didn't realize who that was.:p Yeah I don't know how you managed to play without the proper iwad. You need to have doom.wad for KDIZD.
TUTNT (The Ultimate Torment and Torture) is pretty neat. I've played some of it. It is basically a compilation of the different Torment and Torture wads. Might I also suggest we try some of his other wads? And by his, I mean Tormentor667. He's the guy that runs the website Realm667.
Very cool looking site. I wouldn't mind playing The City of the Damned: Apocalypse with you guys. It's an awesome horror-based wad. Not exactly doom anymore. If you guys don't like the sound of it, there's also plain old City of the Damned, which is more doomy. Oh yeah, I almost forgot. There's also an invasion wad in the style of TUTNT if people are interested in the Invasion mode.
You can check out all his wads (

@ Zerker: I might play another round today, just message me on steam around the time you are gonna play.

So we "finished" Knee Deep in ZDoom (by finished, the final map blocked us from progressing on two separate occassions and we said screw it). Now we started a Stronghold game.
Stronghold is fun.
I also moved the server to my Eee PC. So far I can just put the Eee PC to sleep when we aren't playing and keep our progress. I haven't decided when to pick this up again; I'm kinda thinking of playing more Outlaws tonight, but any other evening is fine with me. Now taking suggestions for game time(s).
And of course, anyone is welcome. Skulltag allows people to jump in or out at any time.

KDiZD is a piece of shit. Ammo distribution is terrible and the maps are too easy to get lost in, in addition I guess to game-breaking scripting bugs that robbed us of the endgame. Really surprised me how unfun it was considering all the time, effort, and hype that went into it.
Stronghold, on the other hand, is great. I've always enjoyed the Invasion gametype, and Stronghold takes it and adds to it a central hub between Invasion matches; a shop system with which to buy deployable inventory items and weapons (sentry turrets, AI reinforcements, and use-any-time classic powerups like quad damage and invulnerability); and a money system by which kills and successful completion of matches translate to credit rewards that you can buy those items with.
Its lives system sucks, though. Lives are inventory items as well (also purchasable from the shop for a hefty sum), and are decremented every time you die in a match. Once you run out of lives, you spend the rest of the match in a prison cell thing and can't get out unless one of the living participants uses up one of their lives to unlock the prison for one other player. The really shitty thing about this is that since you don't get lives back automatically at any time and MUST buy them, most of the time you don't have the money to afford one if you ran out of them during a match. Also, if you have 0 lives when entering a match, it AUTOMATICALLY puts you in jail rather than you getting at least one chance before dying. This is a terrible design decision.
On the whole, though, we're having a lot of fun and have found a workaround for running out of lives, so we've got what we need to keep going to the end. Whoever else would like to join in is perfectly welcome to, as I don't think the player limit is too small to accommodate a few more.

KDiZD is meant for singleplayer. They didn't really test co-op. Ammo distribution (after the first map anyway) is most certainly not a piece of shit.
Trance on 15/11/2010 at 23:45
Yeah, I got the vibe that it was primarily a singleplayer experience pretty early on. Also I'm sure it didn't play well with Skulltag as far as the scripting went, or at least as well as it would play with the port it was meant for. For our purposes, though, it remains a piece of shit.

1st part: Yeah, I kind of agree with you on that. I think the main thing is that we should have enabled item respawns for multiplayer... KDIZD did seem like it was more geared toward singleplayer, so because of this, despite being "cheating" by activating respawns, it'd be a heck of a lot better than having to run around with a chainsaw half the time. Not that killing stuff with a chainsaw isn't fun, mind you. I actually felt a bit frustrated because I'd die quite a few times, and have to run all the way back to where I wanted to be, which is fine in singleplayer I guess, but when everyone is pressing on you want to keep up, you know? Oh yeah, I thought about the port issue too before we played. Even though it supports Skulltag, it probably would have worked better in plain old gzdoom.
Totally agree with you on the lives system. The least they could do is dial down the cost of lives, or change it so that you have a better chance at getting enough cash. It's like we were being punished for death, which I frown upon... Doom players want to KILL shit, not sit in a waiting room for eternity.

Alright, you guys up for more Doom this weekend? I'm going to plan for 3 - 5 pm on Saturday, as that seems to work better for our British friends.
Unfortunately, I accidentally shut down our Stronghold server, so we'll have to <del>just warp to levels once we finish the ones we can get to</del> enable debug mode (which makes all tiers active). Alternatively, we can re-play the first three maps if we get people who haven't tried them yet.
Or we can play a few maps of Ultimate Torment and Torture. I tried a little bit of the first map, and it does seem pretty damn cool.
Both maps advertise up to 8 player co-op, so plenty of people are welcome!

Enabling debug mode (by which I assume you mean entering "puke 766" in the server console) turns all maps into time attack mode. Not recommended, especially since the par times are pretty much impossible to satisfy (failing to get par time loses you the match, btw).
(
http://www.skulltag.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=27362&p=344946) This addon appears to make Stronghold friendlier to Skulltag, including altering the lives system to put it more in line with Skulltag's native Survival mode (meaning lives are no longer inventory items that you can run out of and therefore lose all opportunity to play). Worth trying out. Helios runs a server with this addon and I believe Sneaksie's been on it at least once.
Helios's connection is really good for hosting, and he might be able to host the next co-op run.

@ Trance: hmm, addon... that sounds good because the whole lives thing is kinda annoying me. :erg: Main thing is, I just have to try harder to not die, lol.
@ Zerker: I suggest we try UTNT. Or we could maybe split it up, play a few rounds of stronghold and then change to the other wad. Playing different wads is always nice, instead of doing the same thing all the time.:)

Would love to be there if I can - but I'm probably not going to be able to make it on Saturday. If you're doing the same on Sunday then I'll try to join in.
