In my subjective but correct opinion, everyone in this thread has, collectively, the worst opinions on music and games I've ever encountered.
Here's a brief, chronological history of metal:
You Really Got Me
Black Sabbath
Dio
Motorhead
That Ministry Album That Didn't Suck (the one before Psalm 69)
Godflesh
Who Gives A Fuck

No Iron Maiden?
The fuck, Moyer.
Anyway, deth's opinion is null and void as he hates Schafer because Schafer looks like Whedon. Also, entirely coincidentally, they both look a little like Jack Black. Now, deth also happens to look like a younger, bitterer version of Jack Black when he's actually in possession of some hair, therefore he probably kinda hates himself (and also probably his own guts), which should put this entire mess of a thread into perspective.

Yeah I should put Iron Maiden in there. Also SoaD just to piss people off.

Well, you've already got Motorhead up there anyhow.
Edit: Oh, and for something on-topic, the documentary's surprisingly watchable. Part 2 has guest interviews with Erik Wolpaw, the Amanita Design guys, the Sword and Sworcery fella, Ron Gilbert weighing in as usual... it's better than I expected it to be. It's also surprisingly honest and open about stuff, like questioning whether puzzles interfere with the flow of a game - and I like Schafer's answer to it. While there's nothing to showcase yet, the peek into the ol' creative process was fun, especially the bit where he dusts off the book where he stormed up the name for Grim Fandango. Good stuff.

I thought ep2 was pretty neat with the "let's talk with everyone who has made a decent adventure game in the past 20 years" thing. I think he should have somehow roped Jane Jensen into an interview, too, just for the lol factor.

ffs, ANOTHER thread derailed into "hur durr Brutal Legend sux NO its parody NO ur not true metal fan NO UR MOM fuck you Schafer!" ? Seriously, Brutal Legend is our next Aliens / Starship Troopers, you just cant mention it or the thread is ruined.
But to go on a tangent:

There's nothing specifically wrong with "mainstream" in terms of it actually existing.
Everything is divided into "mainstreams" and "elites." EVERYTHING. On the biking forum people shun those who ride walmart bikes, on metal boards people shun those who listen to mainstream bands, and even here on TTLG we shun those who like "consolitis" games. Same goes for whiskey, guitars, food, books - you name it.
The more you get "into" something the more aficionado on it you become, increasing your standards and being able to appreciate the fine details. But most people don't have time to get into *everything,* so focus on one or two things, and for others, the simple/mainstream/consolitis/newbie version suffice. And that is fine. Each to their own. Move along.

I won't deny that there's a correlation between popularity and quality, but it's pretty damn miniscule. 99.8% of anything mainstream sucks; maybe 99.6% of anything indie/underground sucks.
Actually the % are probably the same, there's just so much more non-mainstream shit that you end up with more worthwhile stuff.

I can't tell anyone I like metal without them automatically assuming I'm a ... closed-minded elitist.

Metalocalypse is metal blackface and it's one of the worst shows I've ever seen.
Oh yes, CLEARLY you're not an elitist.
Christ. Pull the titanium rod out of your ass.

Nice job skipping every post I've made explaining my position to make me sound a hypocrite. I'm not even going to bother, it's not like you'll ever listen.
