Jesus Christ, this circular metal argument got boring ages ago. Get back on topic FFS. I like the coming-of-age theme that Schafer is considering for this adventure game.
metal fans are all a bunch of high fantasy nerds who wear dragon t-shirts anyway

I would post in this thread but dethy already said everything I would and he's dropping some serious truth on your asses, so pay attention.

Ok, I will. (Double post, fuck you). Did anyone watch the Revolver Metal Gods Awards. I did. For about 3.5 minutes. The host, presenters, etc. were all so fucking stupid I almost burned all my metal CD's. It was unbearable. The only band there that weren't complete twats were Machine Head, and as usual, Marylin Manson conducted himself as a grown man instead of a 13 year old horny Judas Priest cliche. And why the fuck was he even there? I digress.
Brutal Legend solidifies all of this ridiculous stereotypes and it DOES make it really hard for those of us who consider Metal to be more like science than art. I'm tired of being ridiculed for buying the new Iron Maiden album when Iron Maiden is at this point very far removed from many of those stereotypes. Same thing for so many other bands who have moved on from that 80's glam/thrash image into making actual art (ok, maybe it's both art and science). Those guys didn't show up at the awards show, and they didn't show up in Brutal Legend either. No Isis, no Soilwork, etc. - just guys with black makeup insisting on "paying tribute" to Dio. I threw up in my mouth.
Listen to Master Dethtoll. He speaks Truth.

The problem IS that you view metal as some srs business science (seriously?). It's music, it's art. There's mainstream and then there's the ug, just like in any form of art. For some reason, metal listeners are extremely sensitive to this split, because their true and only science is being hurt for not attaining glory in the views of these fifteen-year-old teenagers who watch your aforementioned award shows.
Why be so sensitive about it? There's nothing you can do except buy the albums of your favourite djentlemen and promote them. Hating on the mainstream just makes you a prick, who thinks there's more value in your views than others. Hell, I know for certain that I listen and follow music trends way more than the average joe or even an average music fan (or TTLGer), but I will not impose myself on others like that.

fett, I'm sorry people make fun of you when they see a grown man shopping for Iron Maiden albums, but that band
has spent the better part of the last 30 years promoting the image that people have of them, so don't blame Brutal Legend for that.
edit: wait a minute. I just did some Googling. Is THIS the latest Iron Maiden album?

http://img515.imageshack.us/img515/144/thefinalfrontiercover.jpgIs this the one that's more science than art? The one that's supposed to make people take them seriously?
Ok you know what, I take back what I said about being sorry people make fun of you. Hahaha! :D
It's "science" because it's in outer space and there's an alien, right? :laff:

Right, IM is probably a bad example, but their image has always been more infantile than their music. Not sure why being a "grown man" has anything to do with it. Am I supposed to be listening to John Mayer now that I'm past 40?
My science comment is in reference to the fact (FACT) that this music requires more technical proficiency than any other genre, period, in terms of sheer playing and use of theory. That doesn't make it good, but when infused with soul, it does create something that is far beyond the goofy skull and crossbone imagery. Unfortunately, as dethtoll said, the genre has refused to move past 1995 in that regards, whether the music is more sophisticated at this point or not. I always cite Winger as an example of this (though they're obviously a boy/pop/glam band). They were the worst of the worst in terms of image and radio-ready 3.5 minute trite pop songs. Now, Kip Winger writes movie and ballet scores and would be considered more "world" music ala Peter Gabriel. But he still won't cut his fucking hair or burn his leather pants, so there's a very serious disconnect between music and image. Not saying many of the BL cliches aren't well deserved, just that there's far more going on in that sub-culture than what tends to rise to the surface.

So this is secondhand embarrassment for a genre via the medium of a videogame that's a gentle parody of the stereotype that filtered into the mainstream 30 years ago? What if Brutal Legend's design doc had mutated into taking a pop at rock concept albums like 2112 and Lifehouse instead? It wouldn't look very fucking different.
While I admit there's plenty of good shit in the subculture that the mainstream is unaware of past the hair and the skulls and leather, why the fuck should it be the focus for a funny metal game if Joe Schmoe can't relate to it? Sure, Isis, whatever - good metal, I guess, but how many people have heard of 'em? Exactly. They're good, but what do I do with them in my game? Make it a documentary type deal while occasionally prompting the player to windmill his penis at the Kinect lens in a tragic effort at making it interactive?
I'm sure you're all very butthurt about the fact that BL pushes the stereotype past the breaking point and punts your favourite genre back into the unfashionable pit it's tried to claw itself out of for decades, but that's the way a parody works. Get over it.

Are we talking musicianship here, or hair and make-up?
