The main NWN campaign was awful, and while the expansions for it (the two that basically combined to make one long game) were great the engine was always kind of fiddly and meh.
While the campaign sucked, I gotta disagree about the engine. Have you ever tried the editor? It was not only very well designed, but gave you an amazing, amazing level of power up to custom coding stuff with C++ based scripting language. While still stuck in the DnD rules, you could do so much with it, and fairly quickly too. And the multiplayer+DM tools were amazing as well with the right people.
I've always been bummed out it never picked up speed - I lost hours playing on several persistent game worlds with a lot of customizations and great, properly-roleplaying people (had a whole bard trio performing for the whole server once). Closest I ever got to enjoying an MMO.

there were no hills or anything though, it was just ramps up to a higher level of elevation. But yeh it was fun to muck around and create stuff in.

NWN 2 vanilla's ending is pretty rubbish
Up until the
"rocks fall, everybody dies" finale, I actually quite liked the ending, because it was hilarious. Basically asking "how much time have you spent getting to know your party members over the course of the game?" and then having them either betray you or not.
I love exploring dialogue trees, so I ended up with stuff like

You are a creature of despicable evil. Everything you touch becomes defiled, and you are the antithesis of everything I believe in.
*pause*
Nevertheless, I will fight by your side.
