On the plus side, I have pretty much given up on the RPG genre, so it's not really a loss if I have no investment in the first place.
Risen 2, Twitcher 2, Torchlight 2 and others. The genre is not without a future.
But I agree that Bioware behavior is frustrating, they have the power, but not the will to create another BG2. Maybe is EA fault or maybe they lost a healthy vision for the genre.

Why do people hold up BG2 as some kind of pinnacle of RPGs?

I feel like I'm taking the bait here, but umm...Isn't it? Never played it, but just about everyone I've heard that's played it says it is.

It's pretty subjective but there are a hell of a lot of games I'd put above BG2. I personally think Arcanum is the best RPG out there. Moving down my list you'd see Gothic 2, Morrowind, Anachronox, Bloodlines, Deus Ex <strike>and Nethack</strike> before arriving at BG2. But that's just me and I was never able to get into BG2, despite many attempts.
Yeah, so it is a pinnacle of RPGs apparently, I've just never been able to see why. I feel the same way about everything Black Isle ever did though
edit: okay so Perks in Fallout is an amazing mechanic but other than that I'm unable to give Black Isle much more than short shrift

For me, it's a bit like this:
Baldur's Gate 2 ~ Half-Life 2: very polished, extremely well crafted, not necessarily original
Arcanum ~ STALKER: very rough around the edges, original, lacking in polish, more unique experience

If rpgs like Risen and The Witcher are the future, then that about kills it for me.

Age of Decadence is out soon. So hopefully they aren't all dark clouds on the horizon

I'm very cautious about this game. It's out in like what, 6 months? Yet they've not released any gameplay footage publicly to the web, only one fucking CGI cutscene trailer. The game is being hidden away at expos and press presentations, where no cameras are allowed. Do they know that they have a stinker on their hands or something?

some previews say the fighting looks bad, very static for a 3rd person action game (I assume they wanna go that way) with you delivering the same attack animation without blocks or other mechanics we know from 3rd person fighting, just like DA:O - where it was more commonly accepted as "part of the top-down genre". I am not sure what to think of it. I wait for some good PC version preview. it's not on my "preorder"-list like TheWitcher.
