This is how it's done. Its not Nolan's Batman but its a damn sight better than the Sly version. Heck, it's good, impressive even. What does it do wrong? Nothing really, but it juuuuust didn't do enough right to be truly brilliant. As a take on the setting and the character it works very, very well though. And Christ does it earn that 18 rating. This is one of the most viscerally violent sci-fi/fantasy films of recent years with some gore that's on par with what you'd expect if Verhoeven had just made Robocop.
Lean Headey is perfect in this and so frikking (drokking?) rough she's unattractive. But she's so good I felt a little bad that the whole thing didn't gel together as well as it could and as a consequence she's like a piece of cold steel in bowl of blamange. Okay, thats unfair to the rest of the film because Urban does a solid job and even Anderson (don't know the actress) worked; when I first saw the actress for it I though "wtf is going on here?". And it was nice to see Avon Barksdale (Wood Harris) back in the towers. Don't get typecast, yo!
Effects: good. The slo-mo was great, the 3D worked really, really well with it but man they don't pull any punches with the bullet wounds. The score, which is industrial and dark, really added to the whole thing. Great, great soundwork all around that really added to the atmosphere.
My main criticisms are that I didn't feel it kept the pace and I wanted more more more slo-mo! I wanted the Judge v Judge fight to be in slo-mo in the slo-mo factory. I was almost as disappointed as when Batman and Ra's al Ghul didn't have a fight both high on fear-gas.
But perhaps that's just me.
This shouldn't really even be mentioned in the same breath as Total Recrud. See it.

Amazing this one has pulled off, it's got a very positive RT score (95% on 40+ reviews!) and I thought the trailer looked like a Western/Sci-fi remake of The Raid (which I thought was totally fucking overrated).

That's damn good for RT. Top 5% ratings are very hard to come by. There are always a few critics who will dislike most anything, but 95% means that most of the non-cynical ones agree that it's great.

Bear in mind it's a sci-fi action movie guys. It's not deep, there is nothing complex about it, it's just a day in the life of Judge Dredd.

I don't think film critics walk into a sci-fi actioner expecting a treatise on the meaning of life, SE. They are able to accurately assess genre fare for what it is and for something to rate that highly is still pretty damn impressive.

I'm in total agreement with you regarding
The Raid. I could admire a lot of what it did on a technical level but since it had pretty much zero story and character, I was mostly bored watching it. You can do a lot with a flimsy premise if you've got the right actors (see
Die Hard) but
The Raid's cast, of what I assume are mostly professional martial artists, weren't up to the task.
Dredd, however, looks to be much better in this regard and I'm very much looking forward to it. I've been watching a lot of arty/foreign stuff lately so I'm definitely in the mood for a nice gory action film with a hard bastard of a protagonist.

Oh I know that Scots, I just added that for the benefit of you guys. I wouldn't want anyone thinking they were going into Inception is all.

I'm going to see it anyway, but do they say drokk (or stomm) in this one?

Not as far as I can remember. But you should pay attention to the graffiti, jackets, t-shirts etc for 2000AD references if that's what pumps your nads.
