It was also the first 3D movie I've ever seen, and I'll say first off that all of my years of dissing 3D without having experienced it are now justified. The 3D was silly, mildly entertaining at times, mostly confusing (especially when it came to out-of-focus things) and entirely unnecessary.
To be fair, from what I've heard the 3D version was poorly done. If you were to see one movie to judge 3D on, it should probably be Avatar.

I disagree; the 3D was good. Of course some things were out of focus, that's how it works.
I don't really like 3D. I like the idea of it but it's only really been done to good effect in Avatar and the scenery bits of Prometheus (although that may just have been it looking great at iMax). Everything else I've seen it in it's been a gimmick.
Except Dredd. Slow-mo + 3D = win.

So, I can't claim to be particularly impartial in this opinion, but as someone who really likes Judge Dredd, I can definitely state that I thought this new Judge Dredd film was fucking brilliant. Everything was close to spot on. Karl Urban knocked it out of the park, Olivia Thirlby provides pretty good backup, the slightly cruder, more Johannesburg-y version of Mega City One worked perfectly, Lena Headey had exactly the right amount of skeezy charisma, they kept the story tight and simple, and the lawgiver sounds like the end of the fucking world. Really, really enjoyed it. I hope they make more, there is a lot of mega city one to explore (the more ridiculous stuff like Judge Death wouldn't really work in the setting they've created, it's too realism-y, too many cues from District 9), but even if they don't I'm happy they made at least one good film that got Dredd pretty much right. No fucking about, no angsty back story, he's just a no-nonsense man in a fucked-up world who will shoot you in the knees. Wicked.
