Bah, I hate real product advertising in games [well, except in LucasArts games, where the references to their games and movies is entertaining and an in-joke]. Cheapens the whole experience it does. :nono:

Aside from real product placement in games, I think it's great when extravagant fake products are advertised in game. It's a great opportunity to throw a punch at the big boys.

Real-world product placement in games pretty much stinks, though. Gaming is one area that *hasn't* been overly affected by this thus far (not counting things such as sporting simulations which replicate the advertising of the real-world counterparts), and the idea of advertising infesting games in this way is not a happy one.

Indeed. If they want to place adverts in games, they should make them [considerably] cheaper aswell. Pay money to watch adverts? I think not.

So after passing a few times, I decided to pick up Dredd vs Death for $3 in GOG's weekend sale (which is, at this moment in time, still going). The product placement still sucks, but at least I knew to expect it this time. The game is extremely linear, and the gameplay is basic, but I'm quite enjoying it.
It somewhat makes up for its weaknesses with that 2000AD atmosphere -- sufficient to keep me playing, at any rate -- and I still think that Rebellion did at least a half-way reasonable job of rendering the environments and backdrops of Mega City One (you should definitely make sure you take the time to look up and around as you play, so as to appreciate the work they put into it).
It's true that a decent chunk of the appeal comes down to a simple lack of competition in this particular niche -- one can certainly envisage a dramatically better Dredd game than this -- however I'm going to say that if, like me, you have found yourself thinking about this game from time to time, then it will undoubtedly be worth $3 to you.

It was quite humorous but part of me wishes that they had taken the very first part of the game, where you deal with the Riot outside the Precinct, and made that the basis for the rest of the game.
Well, plus BLOCK WAR!, obv.

I completed the story mode last night. All in all, the game was quite a lot more enjoyable that I was expecting! (although my initial expectations were awfully low). I stand by my earlier comments -- it's not the greatest game around, but there's nothing else covering this particular niche, and it really does a pretty decent job with the atmosphere, so if you ever enjoyed the 2000AD comics, you should get a kick out of Dredd vs Death.
(It really is an absolutely killer setting for a shooter. I hope we see another Dredd FPS some day.)
And yes, Block War :) I tried that for the first time yesterday. Good fun (as are several of those arcade modes). I loved that when I picked up a dead Judge's lawgiver and pulled the trigger, it exploded. (No "Hi-Ex" for me in that mode!)
