If you're playing a modern RPG as a female character it probably also means you're actively pursuing a romantic questline with one of the male NPCs in the game.
Just saying

Sorry, but this sounds a bit EMO. You don't like yourself then you look for an alternative universe where you can be whoever you want?
He already said it, but the answer is escapism. Most RPGs give you the option to play as a complete evil bastard. Most people aren't really that sort of person, they just roleplay it because it's different from how they usually act and that's fun. Same thing with race, gender, ethnicity. A lot of people will create characters completely unlike themselves because it's fun to step into someone else's shoes.

Or you can bang leliana.
But jesus, you're not actually having real problems with going after a heterosexual relationship in an rpg, even if you're playing a female?
I can play as much with a homosexual dwarf as I can play a female banging another guy, or I can choose not to bang anyone, or I can go and live the life as a mother in the sims, these are my characters, they're not me, but with them I can escape to other scenarios, or I can like in movies experience other characters lives.

Jeez, if I had to play myself in a role playing game, it'd be the worst game ever.
* One-button combat - "Run away". All the weapons would be greyed out because I don't have any skills or training in them. Most of them are too heavy for me to lift anyway.
* Stats: Strength - 2, Stamina - 2, Dexterity - 1, Wisdom - 3, Nerdiness - 18/99
* Dialogue options: "You're talking to a complete stranger. Do you: a) stare at them in awkward silence? b) crack a terrible joke and then feel embarrassed? c) Attempt to make painfully dull small talk about the weather?"
* Character portrait - I guess I'll have to pick Wouldn't-Stand-Out-In-A-Crowd-If-He-Tried.
* My Inventory has two slots - one for each pocket.
* I probably couldn't pick a class because I don't have any fighting skills, I'm not particularly sneaky, I'm not religious, and (surprise surprise) I can't do magic.
At least I could set my alignment to the same self-absorbed Neutral Evil that most people are in the real world.
It'd be the most horrifically depressing game ever made. Is it any wonder people want to play epic warriors and crafty magicians, completely different to their real lives? If part of that might involve someone thinking it'd be cool to play a sassy, sexy elven beauty, then so be it. Nothing weird or gay about it.
Then as has already been pointed out, men like to look at hot women. It makes up most of our DNA. Playing a video game and looking at a hot woman's ass is as close to multi-tasking as some of us ever get.

Not necessarily my eyes, but I can't help it if the camera's stuck behind and above his/her posterior, can I?
That said, I don't really mind either way. :cool:
Well there are different levels in that too. I'd say in the Hitman games, your eyes more likely to gravitate towards 47's shiny bald head. On the other hand, for example, Metal Gear Solid 2 and 4 ... oohhh. :)
That said, I don't mind it either, but then again, I otherwise never make a female character in RPGs. I even go as far as having a general dislike against games that have a female protagonist. It depends on the game though - it didn't bother me in No One Lives Forever, for example, but it seriously did in Velvet Assassin.

I think its more challenging to use a female. The strength, carry capabilities, less melee damage, just a ton of different things can make it more difficult.
But I will put in a small vote for the more aesthetically pleasing aspect as well.

Great, only I can't think of a single game that would differentiate stats between genders.

Manly men are secure enough in their own sexuality to not fear playing female characters in roleplaying games.
