Here is the (
http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/06/13/wot-i-think-duke-nukem-forever/) RPS grilling.
In the February TTLG opinion roundup, I wrote:
Quote:
Duke was great because it had amazing, interactive map design and amazing, creative weapons, not because Duke was such a great guy or because there were tits. DNF, so far, shows too much of the latter and not enough of the former. I will be happy to be proven wrong.
So, it looks like I wasn't. :tsktsk:

And I said:

I think at this point I don't care what the game is like, I just want to own it, and play it, and be part of history in the making, the end of an era. Maybe, just maybe, we can then put the old days to rest for good.
DNF is actually fucking out, guys. The fact that it's, you know, actually fucking out- I dunno, regardless of the actual content and quality of the game itself, its release is a milestone, and, I think, a sign that it's time to move on instead of being bitter paranoid elitists like we're famous for.

While you use a theoretical milestone to decide whether to arbitrarily turn your attitude towards games around or not, the rest of us can actually play the game, see how shitty it is, ask ourselves why and decide that our elitism with regards to game developers is well placed.
Koki on 14/6/2011 at 08:49
Milestone of what? How fucked up the industry is if they're willing to pump money into one shitty game for fourteen years?
june gloom on 14/6/2011 at 09:03
heh 'arbitrarily' what are you even doing
i only just got the game, go back to minecraft
My point is that 1998 was a long time ago, either get with the times or get the fuck out of gaming, because just sitting around complaining makes you boring and ineffectual.
That being said... I dunno. I thought the demo was fairly mediocre, though not, you know, terrible. I was expecting DNF to be mediocre at best. Big fucking surprise, right? I get that people were expecting at least a blowjob out of this game, but the way some people go on about it makes me think at least a few people are determined to hate it out of spite due to the hype. That and most of the people trashing it so far are European, and European gamers are assholes.
American gamers are awful too, but for different reasons.

Koki, as usual, doesn't know what he's talking about.
The 'industry' didn't 'pump money' into DNF. Take 2 took an investment on the game that didn't pan out. Big fucking deal. That happens all the time in all sorts of fields, it was bound to happen with video games sooner or later. What happened with Take 2's investment was they didn't count on Charlie Weiderhold fucking everything up.

It's funny, the trend since yesterday and probably for the days to come has been a backlash against those who said the game was terrible in the first place. "Not as bad as some say", "I enjoyed it anyway", "Still manages to be fun" followed by bile against the so-called haters is what I read a lot. Well that's cool, I'm not gonna hate you for liking the game or try to prove you wrong so I expect you to do the same. Unfortunately, like with Bioshock we're probably going to see many frothing gamers pack-hunting down nay-sayers. Silly, really.
Anyway dethtoll I don't get how "get with the times or get the fuck out of gaming, because just sitting around complaining makes you boring and ineffectual" is an argument. There are still tons of great games, but when one comes out after who knows how many years and doesn't do a single thing to prove its worth, I think it's reasonable to say it's shitty and try to understand why.
Being elitist sure has a bad rep, probably because people don't understand what it means.

I was speaking in broader terms in my first comment, more specifically in my second.
Here, let me do it again:
It's not that people don't understand what elitism is. It's that elitists tend to be stupid, boring old fucks who say the same god damn things over and over demanding that whatever they're being elitist about cater to them and only them. "you're crapping on my memories!" "it's new/different/the same now it sucks!" "no blood for dmca!" fuck you, you're remembering shit that never happened, you just constructed the memory because that's what people do; here's a memory for you, the old days were not as good as you think they were, in fact they were quite shitty, just like today, things haven't changed, you're just older and you have more venereal diseases now so you're cranky and need something to project your frustration over your failings in life onto; it's same shit, different day, get over it or fucking kill yourself, i don't care which, just shut up because the incessant whining is giving me a brain raisin
Ahem
And actually, you know, being an elitist isn't even all that special anymore. Everyone just parrots what the last bitter asshole said because they can't be bothered to form their own opinions.
As far as DNF is concerned, you know why there's a backlash? I mean, sure, there's going to be die-hard fans who won't accept no for an answer, but a lot of the backlash is A) in response to the sheer, unbridled negativity about it- it's not "oh I didn't like it that much, doesn't live up to the hype" but more "THIS GAME ENRAGES ME BY EXISTING BECAUSE IT DOESN'T GIVE ME A HANDJOB AND BUS FARE" and 2) from people who knew full well the game wasn't going to live up to the hype- WHAT DID YOU FUCKING EXPECT? There are plenty of things worth getting enraged over, and DNF not living up to its own frankly impossible standards is not one of them.
