Unfortunately, like with Bioshock we're probably going to see many frothing gamers pack-hunting down nay-sayers.
Bioshock got mostly stellar reviews.

a loud sound started looping and i couldn't get it to stop, and when i tried to exit the game it froze and i had to forcibly reboot

Installing it now. This wasn't really on my first-day-purchase-developer list since Gearbox didn't really make it, but the huge negative backlash is making me think it has to be awesome. Thanks, folks.

Okay, works better the 2nd go.
Hm. As amused as I am by some of the jokes and stuff you can do, the opening is slow as shit, and the shooting feels janky and not at all smooth. The human models are ugly as sin and the lip-synching is awful. And honestly I was hoping for more killing shit with guns, not throwing trophies at them. I suppose that'll pick up soon.

Make sure you tweak the mouse settings, I found the defaults to be pretty bad, and while the shooting never becomes brilliant or anything, once you get the better guns and the game starts mixing up the monsters, it's solid FPS action. Well, I thought so anyway.
Anyway, I just went back and finished the campaign for the second time which hardly ever happens these days. I can see all it's problems and I know the FPS genre has moved on from this kind of meandering, barely coherent connection of set-pieces that are more conceptually cool than mechanically sound but
goddamit, I had fun. It's been a long time since I've played a shooter where I didn't know what they were going to throw my way next.
I'm guessing it's not very likely but I hope mod tools are released as I'd like to take a crack at fixing the Ego mechanic. Conceptually the idea is brilliant: Duke survives by sheer force of arrogance but it's implemented completely backwards. Hiding like a wuss shouldn't recharge it; killing baddies should, with head shots etc giving a bigger boost. It might also be amusing to make the mirrors take the place of health stations. I'd probably also try to mod out a lot of the repellent/embarassing sexism to bring it back tone more in line with Duke 3D's 'naughty but not really' level.
