Horaay, the legend of DNF can live on a while longer.

All I can say is, if this is correct, fuck Take Two. The LAST thing the industry needs is another small dev team getting screwed over by a monolithic publisher.

I pray the emphasis was put on the 'if this is correct' line.

3DR put over $20m into the production of DNF

3DR was hitting mutually-agreed milestones, despite not having a new agreement finalized
I would love to see that agreement on the milestones.
Come on, 3DR is just trying to save a bit of face, and not lose the rights to all of their IPs in the meantime. Can't blame 'em, but at this point...it is a bit sad, IMHO.

I probably wouldn't have rushed out to buy DNF on what I'd seen prior to the 3DR meltdown but now I probably would.

One thing I don't get about the whole deal is that people keep saying "it was going to fail because people had such incredibly high expectations for it"
That is something I simply wasn't seeing, as most people seemed to expect that any release would suck horribly. Hell, it could be even playable and people would be pleasantly surprised at the quality.
gunsmoke on 19/5/2009 at 02:13
I don't recollect any of my friends expecting DNF to be anything more than average. Most (self included) thought it would be horribly outdated, unoptimized, and disjointed.

With FPS games being as horribly stagnant as they are at the moment I think in this case that an 'outdated' ego-shooter would be a breath of fresh air. I've also been really surprised that the general consensus I've seen around 'teh internets' to the leaked footage has been largely favourable.
3D Realms really do need to pass it on to another developer though. They should definitely oversee the development to make sure it's still Duke etc but obviously their Project Management skills are terrible and not up to the task for making a AAA FPS game.

There is a huge Duke shaped hole in FPS-land.
The meantime pretenders have all blown more chunks than Linda Blair.
