I still remember filling a room in Duke3d with pipebombs and putting a tripbomb so they would all go off when my opponent opened the door. :)
A friend of mine got Duke 3D on XBLA and the lag was so awful, he had a lot of fun putting up Holodukes and watching his opponents scream about how they couldn't hit him. "WHAT KIND OF LAG IS THIS FLEJKFSDLKJFSD"
Ahhh good shit.

Is it just me or are all the locations and boss fights same as in DN3D? Is it like Duke Nukem 3D: Console Edition?
The game apparently starts at the end of Duke 3D which is then revealed to be Duke playing it on a big screen TV in his pad.
Anyway I'm pretty stoked that Gearbox has the franchise now although it has to be said that after looking at that footage and reading around a bit that 95% of what we are seeing is 3drealms' work. I'm guessing most of Gearbox's work thus far has been the console ports and getting as much of the old team together as they can. The game was allegedly close to being finished and a group of ex-3D Realms people had been working on it, thanks to some legal loophole or something, for the last year. This group of developers, Triptych Games, have been hired by Gearbox to help finish the job. Allen Blum is on board and hell, Gearbox seem to have even brought over the 3drealms Duke forum moderator too.
So a whole lot of the original talent, working on the same game but now with some competent management means things are looking pretty dam good.

If it turns out to be good, it'll suck for the 3DR guys who put so much time into it but end up not being the developers to release it. If it turns out to be bad, it'll suck for the 3DR guys who put so much time into it. Funny little Catch-22 there. Not that I'm defending the developers, since if they were good at their jobs it wouldn't take ten years to make the damn game, but now I imagine they won't get much credit for the game.

When people say "Most of the work was done by 3D Realms.", I doubt it. I recall reading faqs about the game while it was in development around 1999 and they were saying the game would have lots of weapons. I don't see 3D Realms limiting us to two guns at a time, because their games were always loaded with guns, some even having multiple functions.

Nicely going past the fact that was 11 years ago and pre-Halo. Then again you read faqs, must be true.

And by "developers" you mean the 5 people who manage the whole project and, most likely, have little to do of actual development?

That "limited equipment" thing wasn't just a Halo thing. Rise of the Triad had the player only able to carry two pistols, a machine gun and *one* of several available missile-launcher weapons at a time. My favorite was the flame wall. Try toasting the enemies with it and watch the skeletons crumple with a hilarious sound effect.

Yes but Halo popularized all the traits of modern console shooters (regen health, limited weapons, cover-based, as opposed to movement-based combat etc.)

+1 on Kuuso's point. The game has changed a lot since 1999 or whenever. It was pretty obvious that douche Broussard and other 3DR execs like Miller were immensely afraid of their game feeling outdated, hence starting from scratch SO many times over the years. Eg wanting to add graphical/gameplay features from the contemporary FPSes of the particular time a major milestone was made.
The (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GaYSOD010mE) leaked DNF footage culled from former employee's work portfolios definitely showed modern FPS features like 2-weapons, context sensitive one-button actions (eg finishing moves on incapacitated opponents), regen health, QTEs, etc. This footage would've been from 3DR builds, not Gearbox ones.

Half of which, frankly, I am really glad about.
