I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it's about time everyone know the truth: Duke 3D is a horrible game, it was *never* any good, and the only reason you ever liked it was because you were 12, and it had tits. There is nothing anyone can do to "ruin" Duke, *especially* not putting it on consoles, because the average "dumb" console game is still smarter than Duke ever was.
Just shut the FUCK UP. Jesus. I sure as hell wasn't 12. More like drinking age, and the tits were funny, pixelated jokes. Duke 3D is awesome, and you, sir, will not shit on that.

I took your advice: I "left it" a long time ago. I can't remember the last time I looked forward to, and rushed out and purchased any mainstream game on release. I guess that was Doom 3. Matter of fact, I don't regret that one bit. Thanks to the modding community, we have TDM and other goodies like Last Man Standing. There was also the awesome remake of Doom episode 1.
It isn't always the original game that gets us to purchase, it is what others can then do with that game. Take Quake 3 for example, it gets dull after a wile. Mods that were originally based on it are more fun than Q3 now. Urban Terror is a blast to play!
What I'm saying is: By going to a console, you are giving us less incentives to buy your game now, because it is a disposable product. We can't even count on being able to play the game online in 5 years, because the console vendors only keep the servers up until the next-gen systems arrive.
While I felt bad for the guys who lost the ability to play Halo 2 online last year, I had to point, laugh, and say "I told you so.". I can at any time load up Halo 1 for the PC and enjoy some CTF mayhem
Sigh. I didn't ask for justification, I'm just sick to my stomach about hearing people go 'AUGHH they killed my favourite franchise X by going to the consoles' for the millionth time.
But fine, since you decided to, let's go.
First: drop the rampant generalising. Servers being turned off is obviously not a concern with single player games, and yet the very opposite holds true for the PC nowadays. D'you think PC titles aren't prey to that sort of thing? Or have you already forgotten about Ubisoft's PC über-DRM? Or should we dig up the entire basis for your anti-Steam rants? (let's
not though, I'm tired of that shit).
Console games have been working towards giving players tools to create their own things for a good god damn while now. Take a look at the reams of user-generated content for Little Big Planet and what's possible with the upcoming LBP2 - hell, it even lets you create your own games within the game. Media Molecule even hired some of the community members that contributed great levels to the game, like id of old used to, and how Valve continues to today.
When you've got stuff like that on the horizon, the future of consoles is bright indeed. Remain close-minded if you must, but complaining about this stuff without taking the complete perspective in just gets tiresome after a while.
Aja: You've not only spectacularly missed the point, but have also completely lost the plot. That is all.

Honestly, I thought Duke 3D was brilliant, but I just can't imagine a modern AAA version being anything but tripe. Take Doom III, for example.
Kuuso on 17/9/2010 at 23:03
I liked Duke3d when I played it. The guns were the most inventive I had seen in any game that far and it was all around different than anything else. The last boss fight is iconic imo.

^^But when a PC vendor decides to shut off support for a multiplayer game, they are *able* to let the community keep it going if they wish. How is id going to convince Microsoft to keep XBOX live afloat when the time comes? Id couldn't even give the players another system to use to play online in the future on a console if they wanted to.
As for user-created game enhancements on a console, let me know when someone can do this:

I'm not talking about changing the clothes on a character or building levels Tony Hawk style from pre-defined assets.

Duke 3D not only was the best first person shooter of its time, but still remains one of the best ever made. The shooting was solid, the graphics good, the environments and puzzles varied, and the interactivity unmatched. It has nothing to do with "LOL TITS" or potty humour. Was it there? Sure. Do we all remember it? Of course.
But my memories of Duke 3D have less to do with sitting in a digital strip club and more with shrinking opponents online and squishing them beneath my foot, or the absolute bloody mayhem caused by the devestator. The crude humour didn't make the game; it just enhanced it.
So I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it's about time everyone knew the truth: Duke 3D is a great game, it was *always* good, and the only reason you never liked it was because you're an elitist prick who resents the fact that the game reveled in its cheesiness instead of trying to be deep or meaningful.
Aja on 17/9/2010 at 23:38
I don't begrudge Duke because it's cheesy - in fact that might be its one redeeming feature. I played it for the first time last year, and found it ugly and tedious. No, I didn't finish the game, but I generally don't make a habit of finishing games that aren't fun.

I don't really care about multiplayer, so this is a non-issue for me. It's a possibility, granted, but with the Xbox 360 and PS3 looking to crack 10 years this generation, it's a distant one that I don't need to care about. I buy console games for the single player first and foremost.
So tell me something, when it comes to single player gaming on the PC these days -- when Ubisoft decides to pull the plug on Assassin's Creed 2's DRM servers and if there's no crack out for it, what happens then? What if you'd like to play a game of Mafia 2 but your internet connection's out?
Or, let's take PC multiplayer, bastion of internet freedom. When Battle.Net happens to go down and you want to play a local game of Starcraft 2 with a friend, with the map on your hard drive, what do you do then? Oh dear me.

I'm sorry, did I say that they're as far along in modding capabilities as PCs are? I don't think I did. Giving people the tools to start modding and creating stuff is a step in the right direction, and that's all. Somebody's gone and made an FPS in a beta build of LBP2 already, and this is in an engine for a platform game.
But forget that. You're ignoring the fact that the majority of games are multi-platform these days, and when they're released for the PC many of them get your precious SDKs. So what you're complaining about, I have no god-damn idea.
