But... if they had stuck with the Unreal engine II, it could have easily been made cross-platform. UT2004 runs great cross-platform. The same situation would have applied: where they wouldn't have to do much work to get a port to happen. This was the case with Prey. It used the Doom 3 engine, and was ported by one guy (Ryan Gordon) after the initial release.
DNF is using a build of either UE1.5, 2 or 2.5, it's just heavily modified to the point where it's unrecognisable, like how Bioshock's of Splinter Cell: Conviction's was.

Now, I understand that they have to try to push the DNF graphics as far as possible to reach today's generation of gamers (which is all said gamers care about).
Only complete nimrods think in all en compassing generalisations like this. It's not worth going further into specifics of how much you're wrong because conversing with you is like talking to a brick wall.

Apparently, D2D purchasers get it too. You should get an email with your code.

Imagine putting both The Nameless Mod and Deus Ex IW on display in a shop for sale. We all know which one has better gameplay, with more possibilities, larger environments, more replay value, tuns of subplots, etc. Which one do you think would sell more copies if there were monitors displaying both games running simultaneously though?
I've seen countless people say "oh, that game looks like crap.. I won't play it." on YouTube. Try creating an awesome (in terms of gameplay) game, but with minimal graphics and see how well it sells.

Seems that all owners of Borderlands on Steam get early access to the DNF demo. Cool.
So, the only way I will be able to play DNF (even the DEMO!) is to use Steam?
That is one less game I'll be playing then.

NO, that's not the case at all. It's only one of several option. The fact that these codes that grant
early access to the DNF demo are distributed with boxed retail versions of Borderlands GotY Edition for PC, which don't use Steamworks, should make that abundantly obvious. Fuck, Gunsmoke's post directly below my last one says that they're also being distributed to consumers who purchased Borderlands on Direct2Drive, probably Steam's biggest competitor.
I know that this maybe a hard concept for you to grasp, but I strongly advise you to stop and actually think whilst writing posts. Like trying to get some confirmation before jumping to conclusions and assuming that they're correct. The answer to question, combined with common sense, likely would've been one just a 30 second Google search away.

Fuck using insane hypothetical analogies, since no rational person on the planet would think that selling a mod for a 9 year old game period, let alone on brick and mortar retail shop shelves, would be a good idea. (Even if wanted they wanted to, I highly doubt that they would get Square Enix's consent.) Let's stick to Duke Nukem Forever. If had you could fucking see properly, you'd know that DNF doesn't have good graphics by even modern console game standards. DNF will sell like hotcakes, I assure you, but it won't be on the back of graphical prowess. The selling points will certainly include the novelty of old school-ish '90's FPS gameplay; the game's sense of humour; and nostalgia for Duke 3D and/or a bygone era of games.

Have you been living under a fucking rock for the past 3 years or so? Dozens of indie developers have done just this and in a lot of cases had reasonable success. There have been several such games that have been produced with fairly/very low budgets and then sold cheaply on digital distribution retailers like Steam, Impulse and Gamersgate. Zeno Clash, Uplink, Darwinia, FUCKING SHITLOADS of games on XBLA and PSN, just to name a few.
If a game is genuinely good, more often than not word of mouth will spread and it will thus find an audience/customer base.
I mean even trash games by Derek Smart/3000AD have a loyal customer base. Derek has had enough success that he still makes his very niche brand of games to this day as his full time job.
EDIT: Actually Derek Smart games usually have badly dated, hideous graphics too. The gameplay has a lot of depth, but the learning curves are incredibly steep usually because of terrible, unintuitive game and GUI design. He used the same fucking GUI system with barely any improvements from Battlecruiser 3000AD until the last Universal Combat game.

Poll: Which will be released first? DNF or the Thief 1/2 source code? I never thought I would say this, but... DNF!

Can this game just come out, be mildly amusing and go away already?
