That quote also misses out the main reason id used EAX for those games; Creative claimed prior intellectual property on Carmack's Doom 3 lighting code and forced them to adopt EAX in return for not suing.
The leaked Doom 3 alpha actually had Carmack's sound engine implemented, and it was pretty impressive for the time it was released.

Anyone else wondering why Creative were messing around with lighting in the first place? They're primarily the sound guys to my knowledge.

One of their subsidiaries, 3DLabs (now ZiiLABS) used to make high end 3D cards. Creative acquired 3DLabs in 2002, which was convenient for their legal case against id.
You've heard of the FireGL? That was 3DLabs.

They also used to make video cards too, starting from around the time NVidia popped up with the Riva128 - they had VooDoos, Radeons and GeForces up to the Voodoo3, Radeon X700 and GeForce FX series.

Go on,
touch click it. Anyway, there's one golden comment on RPS complaining about how earlier builds of the game had the character's hand show up on screen and actually interact with objects that got activated. I guess we really do wanna touch it.

I would think it'd be nicer to have a hand showing what you're doing if it's done just right. I guess they took it out because it looked weird.
