Why the **** can't we have a self-extracting EXE demo that works for EVERYONE at once and gives us both a multiplayer and single-player taste of the game?

Because that would be too simple and effective. Such a big title has to have a convoluted mess of a demo.

Downloading the demo now. I'll post my thoughts

To drive pre-orders.. makes perfect sense to me. Support the development and get a reward nobody else does. I'm not saying they did it right, but it makes sense.

OK, played the demo...
It's rather limited in what you can do in it.
You can interact with things in the world. And throw faeces...
There are also a few easter eggs and stuff as well.
Try shooting the tiny red dot on the rocket.

well.. 30 minutes later and I beat it. 2 levels, the first of which seems to be the final level from episode 3 of dn3d all re done and such. It's taken the awful turn of being like modern day shooters. Only 2 weapons can be carried at a time + pipebombs. Post Processing effects galore which are terrible because its on UE3.
The artwork is top notch however, and stylistically I think its true to the original while ramping it up in all the right ways. The aliens are less cariacature now and look genuinely freaky. Mind you all I really saw were pig cops.
Also.. Get the friggen tool tips out of my way. I even turned hints off and they're still there. ugh.

I'm not one to usually complain about something like this, but the 2 weapon limit is really annoying. Maybe it's just because they wanted to show off all the different weapons in the demo but you hardly have time to use a gun before you find a new one right around the corner and of course you need to ditch the old one if you wanna try the new one out. Oh cool, the shotgun! Wait here's the RPG, I'll take that one instead. No wait... Shrinkray! If the demo is any indication, a 2-weapon limit has no place in a Duke Nukem game.
Also, it looks quite dated (natch). That aside: it's an alright FPS with some cool setpieces.

As someone who's been doing a lot of reading and reasearch into graphics theory lately, could I ask you to elaborate on that? I'm not criticizing, just curious to hear why you think it's terrible. I know only the basics of the UE3 render pipeline and from what I've seen in 3rd party games I didn't think it was particularly worse than any other engine.

Over-use of post-processing effects are generally terrible no matter what the engine. People just don't know when to stop using them.
A small amount of subtle bloom looks good, so they assume a huge amount of over-the-top bloom must be better!

I understand your question and it's a fair one. I dont have a good answer other than I can really tell that it is UE3. It looks the same whether its UT3, blacksite, or whatever. nd I find it distracting from the game, better without it. I'll elaborate more later, i'm typing this on my android
