I though of System Shock the second I posted that, but kept it because I found the word "GAMECHANGER" hilarious.
I might be a bit drunk.

what matters is whether air ducts are innovative at all
(http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/innovation) innovation: the introduction of new things or methodsConsidering that air ducts pretty much became a staple of FPS leveldesign from DN3D onwards I'd say that... yeah, they were innovative.

'Innovative' is meant to be a positive word. The abundance of bullshit vents all over the goddamn place is not something I'd use positive words for. Especially when they're essentially just really short corridors you have to crouch in, are very easily designed because you just have to spam the same texture over and over again and you don't have to bother with complex architecture. 9 times out of 10 vents are just lazy mapping. Hardly innovative, unless you count finding new ways for developers to fuck off.

I'd say the way Deus Ex used vents was generally good (e.g. as alternate routes you could take to avoid being seen).

Well that's the 1 time out of 10 I didn't mention there :)

The levels in Duke felt much less restrictive than those in Doom did. This was partly because of the better engine, but partly because of things like vents too. For the first time, you could have spaces that existed above other spaces. Don't tell me about Descent or SS, I know about them, but I hadn't played them up until that point. Before Duke, all I played was Wolf3D and Doom.
One thing that I always found funny though were the useless features like the ability to turn your head without actually aiming in that given direction. It is home and end IIRC. I never once used that feature during the game because it was quicker to just turn... lol
Maybe it was just there to add immersion.

Was turning-by-keyboard fast in Duke3D? I can't remember. I know that I use the head-turning keys in Terra Nova whenever I play it, because there's no mouse-look option.

The head-turning was instantaneous. You push the button to look, and let go to stop looking.
