I was in a Halfprice Books store the other day, and came upon a brand new copy of Thief 2 still in it's shrinkwrap! I loved it way back when I played it in college, so I just couldn't resist picking it up. I guess that's irrelevant, but I'm pretty stoked and couldn't help but share. ;)
Anyway, the lightgem... We all know, darker lightgem = less noticeable. But I'm wondering about the little vertical light built into one side of it. As the gem brightens, it changes colors (black to yellow to red, if I recall). Does it actually serve a purpose, say measure sound while the gem measures light, or is it simply redundant?

It's fairly redundant. I can't be certain, without a few seconds of experimentation, but I think it shows three stages per change in the big gem. I remember only noticing it, really, when I'm trying to get the gem as dark as it will get. Even if the big gem is darkest, the little lights can change.

as far as I'm aware, it's just an easier indicator of visibility. Black=only visible if you get bumped into. Yellow = visible from a short distance away, red = fully visible. I missed it a lot in Deadly Shadows.
