Played some more, it's not bad aside from the obligatory inability of Obsidian to make a functional goddamn camera.
I like that they incorporated an NPC influence system as well as branching dialog into an otherwise mindless hack and slash. The awkward menus aren't so bad, although there really needs to be a way, in-game, to see all of the keyboard shortcuts (assuming there are any besides F and C).
Also, I think I'd enjoy the demo more if it had all the characters in it. The one I really want to play is sexy gun-toting girl, not the elemental druid thing of mr spanky the paladin.

Why do the DS fans seem to hate this so much? I played through the demo and found it enjoyable at least.

Because people who bought DS hate videogames, freedom and America.

I finished it with the rifle and then the fire char and it was ok, a few annoying bosses but overall I liked it. It's rather light on loot and skills but what there is, is enough imo. I would not pay full price though.
Most surprising thing is the amount of writing in it. Lots of books and long conversations, a few funny ones included.

Which of these characters was more interesting/satisfying to play? I was thinking of choosing one of them.

I don't know, I liked both. I made both crit builds and they ruled every mob apart from stupid insta-kill boss attacks (most bossfights involve heavy kiting unfortunately). rilfe needs to dodge more but I love her "prey" skill where marked targets explode when you finish them off quickly. fire char is more varied and can stand in the thick of things and has the flashiest moves/skills. So if you wanna see pretty colorful fights: fire, if you wanna clean out a mob before he even enters the room: rifle.
companion AI is a little weak and all enemies usually aggro only on you so prepare to do the most fighting yourself and the occasional revive when your partner refuses to move out of a boss AOE.
as a rifle I took the melee guy, as fire I took the rifle char as partners.
