Am I the only one who loathes the Mayday set?

I played it when it first came out, really early version. I was doing fine, got into like the 3rd or 4th year, really proud I got so many parts working right, until a single goblin took out practically the entire fortress before I could figure out how to make a dwarf fight him. I had weapons made and military dwarfs, but somehow something didn't click. For most jobs you can learn as you go and screw it up the first few times until you get it right; but for military dwarfs, at least then, the first occasion is a decisive one.
If this gets rolling I might jump in some weekend, though I don't think I can invest much in training myself in advance. Hopefully there's a quick primer where, if you know how to play the original, it can fill you in on new features.

Nah, but the Lazy Newb Pack at least offers you a choice of graphics packs.
But if you like to play default with non-square tiles, hey, whatever floats yer boat.
Me, I like things to actually look like things.

I'll find ironstone or whatever and post a screen and also reply to malf when im not posting from a fackin phone. demagogue the switch to 2010 isn't bad especially with military/barracks improvements

Although it can take some time to get your head around alerts and schedules and assigning units to such.
Danger rooms make it a bit more bearable though, as you don't have to worry so much about training schedules, just park yer dorfs in the room and wait for them to hit legendary.
And defining a burrow but not assigning dwarves to it means you've got a bolt hole defined for when the gobbos inevitably gate crash. Just set yer civ to that burrow in Alerts when invaders do what invaders do.

I would, but I've never bothered with Dwarf Fortress and I guess it's a bit tricky to learn. I've played a lot of roguelikes, but dunno if that helps.

It helps with being able to tell what's going on between all these d's and g's
