There have been some DF mentions on TTLG before but I see there was not a single dedicated thread. So here it is.
And there is a good reason to make one now. Just look at (
http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/imgs/larger1.png) this.
Yep, new version(0.28.181.39f) is out and as you can see... you can see! You're now able to expand the view to whatever dimensions you want.
This also means that people who didn't try the game out yet have no more excuses. (

Is it better than Gothic 3?
Koki on 14/8/2008 at 06:48
Gothic 3 slows down all the time. Dwarf Fortress slows down only at the endgame :thumb:

It's....some ascii :D
Ok, so I've never been tempted to try it.
Can someone have a stab at explaining to us non-believers why, in a nutshell, we should be playing this?
Hemebond on 14/8/2008 at 08:45
I can see.... more gobble-dee gook. Seriously, images aren't evil; they can actually make a game better.

I got tired of ASCII after Super ZZT.

Dwarf Fortress is too complicated for graphics.
Ok, that's a (
http://mayday.w.staszic.waw.pl/df.htm) lie.
As for what Dwarf Fortress is... it's Civilization meets Dungeon Keeper meets Nethack meets Sims. Kinda.
There are two game modes: Adventurer and Dwarf Fortress. Adventurer plays like ye olde roguelike, except you can choose to break your enemy's middle finger on left foot. In Dwarf Fortress you are building... a dwarf fortress, with seven dwarves with skills you choose, equipment you choose, in a place you choose. Did I mention world is randomly generated?
The game doesn't have an official ending and your goal is simply survival by making(and trading) food, water, alcohol, clothes, weapons, armor, stonecraft, metalcraft, bonecraft, woodcraft, gems, traps, animals, and other junk while simultaneously battling against vermin, kobolds, goblins, water floods, lava floods, lava creatures, ancient beasts, hunger, lack of alcohol, killer carp, (
http://fromearth.net/LetsPlay/Boatmurdered/) bloodthirsty elephants, cannibalistic elves, dwarven "moods", catpocalypse, tantrum death spirals, miasma, useless immigrants, nobles with insane demands, and more depending where you decide to settle down.
Yeah, it's a lot of fun.
The graphics are spartan but I assure you it takes about a day to get used to them, especially now when you can resize your window((
http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/1742/level02ig8.png) this is how it looked just two weeks ago). The real problem is the steep learning curve. There is literally hundreds of everything, and even after a week I was still playing with the (
http://dwarf.lendemaindeveille.com/index.php/Main_Page) Dwarf Fortress Wiki open. The game can be paused at any time though, so it's not a problem. Just make your first fortress according to the "Your first fortress" article, and by the time it falls you'll know enough to play almost comfortably. There's also an IRC channel, #df at irc.synirc.net for more technical questions("How do I move animals from animal traps to a cage?" etc.).

It wasn't so much the graphics, rather the interface that drove me away from it.
I really want to try it, but it's just too user unfriendly in its current state.
Gambit on 14/8/2008 at 11:20
People normally separate graphics from gameplay but in this case graphics could really improve the gameplay.
Ulukai on 14/8/2008 at 11:39
The premise sounds interesting, I'll give you that.
Might be one to install on my lappy and play around with when my TV remote has been commandeered...
