As stated in the other Roguelike thread running in GenGaming, a new version of Dwarf Fortress has been released. It's buggy, also regularly going to receive updates. (

I'll probably never play the game myself, but it's always amusing to read the occasional (short) anecdote:
Quote:
I walk into a human villiage, and do the first thing any self-respecting dwarf would do. Decapitate a passing human child. This seems to upset a nearby guard, who starts running towards me, so I pick up the childs headless corpse and throw it at the guard.
The childs body hits the guard full in the chest with sufficient force to crack several ribs, and causing one of them to drive itself into the guards heart, piercing it. Just a couple of turns later, he keels over and begins dying of internal injuries.

I'm loving it, but some of the new systems are even more complicated than learning to play was in the first place. The military system makes no sense whatsoever, and I haven't even started looking at the burrow system.
Then there's the nice idea of plaster for broken limbs, except it can only be created from gypsum, which I appear to have none of on my map.
Still, early days yet. I'm sure it'll all come together sooner or later.

The trimming of hair/nails is also possible for civilized creatures, and they will grow long and unkempt without such activities.
I just can't quite agree with Toady's sense of priorities, yet I'm glad that someone with those priorities exists because otherwise stuff like this would never be done. :p

There's a sequel of sorts on the Let's Play website with a settlement called Syrupleaf. Hats off to those who have the patience to navigate that interface long enough to make a readable history.

The official Dwarf Fortress forums seem to be down. :(
I'm seriously thinking about making my own interface for the program, with real buttons and all that jazz, doesn't seem to be overly complicated, just capture the events from my interface and translate them into keystrokes and send them to the dwarf fortress window. It would force you to play in a window, but the ease of use should be worth it. Even more if I can combine it with StoneSense, that'd really be the shit!
Oh, a man can dream...
