Anybody know if i'd be able to play DX on a 56k modem without a ton and a half of lag(i don't want to dload a 40(?) meg file if it's pointles) i play counter-strike sometimes and i've got pings of 200-400 all the time, and i've heard that DX MP is already pretty laggy even with cable users. so tell me what you think...if it's possible then maybe i'll dload that huge patch.

It's not too laggy. I think. I haven't played in awhile. As long as you don't use the sniper rifle all the time it's not too bad.

I get about 350-450, and its playable, without sniping. (in Counterstrike I get 150-250, on good servers)
Of course, that was with the old update, so it might have improved

Why would sniping change pings drastically enough to cause people to avoid it?

It doesn't change the ping -- it's just that a ping of more than 200 or so makes the delay too long to effectively hit someone.

I use a 56k... it's kind of OK.
About as good as you'd expect for Multiplayer really :)
(ie: not very, but hey at least it works)

Oh, the thing you need is a good server, cable will do but if the server's bad, you're buggered.
