I'm probably going to really regret posting this, since this
is TTLG, but...
Basically Chloe Sagal, who developed freeware indie game (
http://did-not-finish.com/2013/04/a-fist-full-of-dollars-homesick/) Homesick, is dying of metal poisoning because doctors left a piece of a friggin' car in her after an accident. She's got months to live at most, and her family refuses to support her because she's not straight. (
http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/i-am-going-to-survive) So she's asking for financial help.
The bit that pushed me over the edge from "show this to everyone" to "pitch in a few bucks myself" was the update where she called her mom to tell her she was dying and got nothing but grief because she's not straight. Anyone who turns their back on their kid who's dying and needs help, simply because of their sexual orientation, is a fucking monster.

Thanks for sharing this, dethtoll. This kind of thing makes me deeply sad. Here's hoping no one will take a facile TTLG Sarcasm dump on this.

Why the fuck won't the medics just take the metal out for free if it's their mistake?
This is the sort of shit I'd expect from a third world country!
:/

Just staggering that the richest country on earth can't even look after its people and glad I live somewhere which (for now, but not for long I suspect) would treat me immediately if I was dying from a treatable condition.

As soon as I get paid I'll be chucking $10 in. I quite liked Homesick and this situation is just fucking horrible.

Ho-lee shit. Amazing.
On the bright side, as soon as this gets around to Pharyngula or somewhere that will probably sort her out.

She's over 80% there anyway, so it's looking good.

Metal poisoning? What type of metal? I mean, lots of people get steel shrapnel stuck in them, it's dangerous but it's not toxic. I'm a bit dubious to be honest. Why aren't her insurance company paying? Why isn't she suing the doctors to finish their jobs? Why is she literally the only google hit for 'metal poisoning from shrapnel' given how often people get shrapnel stuck in them?
faetal on 9/4/2013 at 11:15
I'm perhaps not as dubious as Vivian, but I can confirm that google is not turning up much, other than heavy metal poisoning. The shrapnel would need to contain certain soluble metals with no biological function in order to cause damage I think. Unless it is some kind of infection, which would explain cortisol involvement (immune suppression) as a trigger for degeneration. I'm not convinced it's a scam, but it could use a little more information as it currently doesn't seem to be a typical condition.

The saga has had a convoluted history,
indiegogo froze the second fundraising campaign to check it's legitimacy and released it declaring it kosher.

It certainly appears that indiegogo froze and subsequently unfroze the campaign, but have they declared anything about it? Or was that just an assumption that people made?
I kinda hope that Chloe provides some more details, because as it stands it's vague enough to give me pause, but if it's all on the level then I really hope she gets everything she needs.
