Well, there are some heavy metals in your typical car. The battery is lead-acid. Maybe 'metal poisoning' is a kind of black humor, the way a man who gets shot might be said to have 'lead poisoning'?

For what it's worth, the report I'm working on right now is about the risks of heavy metals in scrap left by wars & the legal obligations regarding them... Including internal exposure since we're also talking about munitions, bullets left inside of people.
So I've been up to my neck in reading study after study about it.
Happy 10th Anniversary of the Iraq war everybody...
I'd imagine there's some very strict policy against using those kinds of metals for internal clamps of all things... But I can also imagine a person not wanting one left in their body no matter what the risk. You don't even need hypochondria to be legitimately paranoid about shit like that... get it out, get it out...

Disgusting...I hope those parents have this on their conscience for as long as they live.
In the event that it is a scam however, it wouldn't be the first. Not long ago there was a guy here in Canada who said he had cancer I think and scammed good hearted people out of thousands of dollars. Last time I had checked, he was out travelling the world. Can't recall his name.

Catalytic converters are full of exotic metals, too.

Platinum and Palladium though - they're not really reactive enough to be poison, typically.

I'm probably going to really regret posting this, since this
is TTLG, but...
I don't think you should feel bad at all for posting this, even IF it proves a scam. At worst, it just paints you a slightly guillible, but kind-hearted person (WTF DETHTOLL BEING NICE, WHAT HAPPENED TO MY TTLGZ!!!)

I'm a bit skeptical of two lawsuits that were unsuccessful because she was "unprepared." Was she representing herself here? If so, that seems very odd, as there are lawyers out there that will work for a percentage. Not to mention that the the case seems like a slam dunk.
Well it's big insurance companies you're dealing with here, they have a whole army of experienced lawyers backing them, so im not surprised theyd find a way to weasel their way out of this, especially if she cant afford a good lawyer herself.
As for the "why dont she just talk to hospital / sue / claim damages etc." well... she has a month to live. That probably wouldnt be enough to even get the paperwork processed, knowing hospitals and the law system.

I know this has a very good chance of making me sound like an asshole, so I have to phrase it carefully: The information given is just vague enough, the condition is just odd enough, and the idea of insurance winning a court battle for refusing to pay for life-saving surgery just ridiculous enough (maybe she changed insurance and it was considered a pre-existing condition?) that I would want a little more evidence of some kind before throwing in my money. Even just a picture of the X-ray would suffice.
Call me jaded, but it's just too easy to scam people over the Internet with a fundraiser and sad story. If it's legitimate I'd happily throw in a couple bucks.
Just as I said to dethtoll, I don't think you should feel bad for questioning it, after all, it IS the internet. And let's be honest, half of us were thinking this but were probably worried to voice it, so somebody had to say it. All valid concerns, too.
That being said, I was actually considering contributing (even if I do get scammed, I agree with the logic posted before), but apparently:

So much for that?

That's odd, the page wouldn't just go down because the goal was met, would it?
faetal on 10/4/2013 at 08:11
Hmmmm.
At the least, I do kind of like the fact it had a stretch goal.
