Tony never misses an opportunity to shoe-horn his MRA rage into a thread.
MRA-rage is cute.
have you even read the things I've said about MRA's?
They're quite perfect for angry internet SJW's. SJW's and MRA's are the Pepsi and Coke of hideous, basement dwelling, internet trolls. The part which is most amusing is that both groups are individually smarter than you are.

Serious question here: did you actually think I was serious?
Suffice it to say that I've seen people accused of being Gamergaters for a lot less than what you said about the games media.
This is Internet, I don't know you, and you didn't use any emoticons. I only described what pretty much is the originally intended/historical role of the press (before the Internet and rise of low-paid amateurs). Not sure how people go from that to GG... Jumping to such conclusion, in terms of quality of thinking, isn't that far from believing that GG is a meaningful movement - and in that regard I'd be more than delighted to avoid conversation with both sides.

I'd take that seriously if I thought you were somehow qualified to say it.

Preferably yes it is good to avoid them, although I will admit to having trolled a few MRA sites. Saying that women treat them like shit because they're losers, followed by a word or two bragging about having a happy marriage is usually enough to trigger some epic butthurt on their parts.
Still combine GG with the fanboyism mindset that is common in videogames and you get a volatile combination. You're correct that what you described is the intended and historical role of the press, but such is the times that demanding the press (especially the gaming press) do their damn jobs that is more than enough to get you labeled as a kook, a gamergater, or a conspiracy theorist in many places.
My breaking point was after I wasted cash on Dragon Age 2 after reading a lot of positive reviews of the game. In part based on the print version of PC Gaming's review:
They rated it a 94 out of 100 with:
Quote:
Dragon Age 2
The best RPG combat ever. Not gaming's best story, but maybe its best storytelling. Darker, sexier, better.
The overall Metacritic scores stand at 4/5 as well. I don't know in what universe the "critics" were able to get such positive reviews of the game but it clearly wasn't by actually playing and reporting on it.

The gaming media is a bad place to get reviews from generally, given that they get a lot of their revenue from advertising and it isn't unheard of for bad reviews to be met with a "re-negotiation" of the advertising contract.
I usually come here for gaming reviews, or take a look at metacritic. Rock Paper Shotgun can sometimes yield the goods, once you calibrate for the individual predilections of the reviewers, but that obviously takes time and involves a certain amount of trial and error before becoming effective.
With these filters, I passed on DA2 because most of what I heard was that it was a bit meh.
Tony_Tarantula on 2/7/2015 at 16:04
True, but back when DA2 came out it there hadn't been too many major instances where literally every major publication said a game was good before it turned out to be a steaming pile of manure.
I noticed that the same thing happened with Inquisition. Most of the gaming press loved it, and the user word of mouth(outside of the bizarre world that is Bioware fandom) was much less positive. After Witcher 3 I can't figure out what on earth they were excited about: the game's basically an MMO where you can sleep with your party members.

I don't know, for a while now I've preferred to see what TTLG made of something rather than try to get a feel for something in an article written by one person.
This place has quieted down a great deal over the years though so it's not the go to it once was. Now I have to piece it together with some careful cross-referencing. If I'm not absolutely sure I'm going to like something, I'll wait until it comes on sale or something. This is what I don't own any Call of Duty games past CoD2.

Yep - good old Activision. I don't think any Call of Duty game from 4 onwards has ever been less than £10 on Steam. Since I'd never dream of playing the multiplayer, that's about 70% too expensive for me to bother with. I wonder how many other single-player-only skinflints like me there are, and how many £3s they missed out on. Not that they care, what with their mountains of gold, but still, seems like it wouldn't hurt anyone, and would gain them a bit more money.

@ faetal - if you're interested, the first CoD Modern Warfare was actually a damn good game. It was one of the first to really pull off the cinematic feel in an FPS without going too overboard with it (save a few instances). I'd definitely recommend it. I havent played anything past but the first is solid imho.
