Sorry if that came across as insulting.
Heh, no. Relax. It just came across as nitpicking. The writing
is hard to follow at times but to focus on that and ignore the issue at hand came across as a bit... well, nitpicky.

On a related note, is there any real organization for the industry that tries to prevent this sort of crap? I seem to recall reading that union structure wouldn't work well, does this mean that programmers are essentially held at the whims of their employers?

Well for one, I couldn't be arsed to read the letter more than a few sentences, because it's such a horribly written piece.

Well, I donno, when someone
writes a
letter I'd think grammar and vocab would be a fairly big deal. I tl;dred the letter but reading the excerpts posted by catbarf I seriously can't understand what the hell they mean. I'm sure you can decipher them in context - but you shouldn't have to.
As for the actual situation... balls, I guess. Coders really need some unions stat. I guess I'm lucky that the company I have been working for treats their employees pretty awesome, but then again, that's what you'd expect from a small dev.
And maybe that's the crux of the issue? Small vs. big businesses? Not only in games, but in any industry. The bigger the business/ company, the less the individuals matter; they become dispensable and replaceable entities. Wasn't that one of the inevitable outcomes of industrial revolution and introduction of the factory system? Essentially the reason why Karl Marx ragequit capitalism.

To be fair to catbarf; although I know what they were moaning about what sprung out at me most was how atrocious the writing was. I mean, its so bad its funny and its clear its because they are punching way above their weight and trying too damn hard. Just being clear is never bad and this kind of verbal diarrhoea deserves all the mocking it gets.

It's worth reading the comments.
(And the writing style gets its fair share of stick in there as well, some guy even went so far as to rewrite it.)

Yep, and part of its also attitudinal. In a small studio, you actually know your employees by name. In a large one, they are simply peons; ignorant serfs who after all, DESERVE to be treated like crap because they aren't part of the management class.
