Basically, it's an open-world naval combat game set in the Age of Sail, with eight different nations to play as. The game features both combat and trading, with combat handled through RTS mechanics, although you may take control of one ship. And, of course, multiplayer for up to eight people. Graphics look very good- not Crysis-level, but it has individual crewmen rendered in 3D and the ships look very nice.
There haven't been many good naval games in this time period, so I'm hoping it turns out to be at least decent. It comes out in a couple of days.

The biggest thing I remember about it is that 3 of these type of games were coming out this year ... East India Company, Empire - Total War, and I forgot the 3rd one (I was thinking it was 1701 AD, but that came out a few years ago). Between EIC and Empire TW, I gather if you like the colonizing and economic aspect of the period, and the fighting more tactical, you'd like EIC. And if you like the more strategy and warfare aspect of it you'd like Empire TW, and the fighting like the other TW games in form.
I have to admit I like big sailing ships. I used to live in Nagasaki, and they had a big ship festival where these huge sailing ships would come into harbor all day long, and I loved it!

I used to play an old game called Age of Sail, based on a board game called Wooden Ships & Iron Men. Since then I haven't found a good, tactical naval sim. I'm hoping for the best.

FYI it is available for pre-order from Steam, and if you pre-order you get some Pirate DLC for free. I'm a sucker, so I did so, even though it's a pretty bullshit move to withhold content that's already been made for the game just so people have to pre-order or pay later to get something that could easily be included upon release.
I absolutely adore games like this, and this year has been absolutely fantastic for me. The only thing that could possibly make it better is a new CIV game, but that's not going to happen (and really isn't necessary, to be honest).

No wai, Alpha Centauri II first pls
I'm also very interested in EIC. I see that GamersGate is doing the same deal with the Pirates DLC - I just wish there was a review or two floating about.

Not worth the £30 Steam want for it imho.
