Ah i remembered what it was - aureal a3d.
ah also here: (

seems to state that thief 1, gold and thief 2 support: Aureal A3D, DirectSound 3D & EAX
and thief 2 supports: Aureal A3D & EAX 2
quite how accurate this is I don't know. Would explain things about problems with the a3d.dll or something.
Hmm but i don't understand, does that mean it is possible to use both in conjunction with each other? And what things even "support" a3d - or does everything?

I totally forgot about A3D, but I didn't quite know that it was supported by older Thief games. The only major difference I know about it is that while EAX enhances received sound in an area, Aureal A3D calculates actual reflections off the 3D surfaces. Still Aureal bankrupted some years back and Creative (its rivel) bought the A3D technology. I'm not sure what they did afterwards.
