I did a search and saw conflicting information. Here is my situation and question. I am about 90-95% done building a T2 FM using NewDark and I ma at the point where there will be no more room brushing so it is time to address EAX. Do EAX settings work with NewDark? I will go through the pain of doing it if it makes a difference but it is a lot of pain to go through (big mission) if there is no real benefit.
Thanks

IMHO there is little benefit.
I think that if the player is set up to use either OpenAL or DirectSound, then they can hear EAX. From antimatter_16:
Quote:
Creative has something called "Creative ALchemy" which (as I understand it) intercepts old DirectSound type system calls stuff, and translates it to OpenAL. Realtek has something called "3DSoundBack" which was for Vista, and must be run in compatibility mode for Vista. (At least on Win7, dunno if it works on Win8.) Anyhow, you have to setup Alchemy or 3Dsoundback application to work with a specific game, and they both just copy some DLLs to the game folder.
I think someone made a hacked version of ALchemy which worked on all sound card types, however, as far as I know, neither 3DSoundback or ALchemy works for all games. I've tried it with Thief2, and it works, but it did not work with Thief1.
I just don't know how many players can hear it. NewDark claims to support it but ...

I use OpenAL and the EAX settings work for me with my onboard sound output.

It definitely works. The differences between some settings can be subtle, but if your mission has a mix of large and small spaces it's probably worth the effort to set the EAX types appropriately.

It would be great to know what percentage of players have it configured and working, though. If it's 0.2% it's not worth the trouble; if it's 10% then it might be. Of course there's really no way to guess, since even a poll done here wouldn't probably be accurate.

Never bothered with it myself. Always sounded way too wet and I'm a musician and a reverb junky.

Yep, just install OpenAL, and it works with any setup: (

Wonder if that might be worth a thread in the FM forum - not sure how many people know about it.

I have the X-Fi card as well. I turned CMSS 3D and Crystalizer off because they made Thief and everything else sound unnatural.
I can tell a difference between the different EAX settings but I could not really guess which one I was listening to in a random mission unless it is something like Sewers.

Yeah, I never really use them either. The only time I would ever use that CMSS-3D would only be for when I use my 5.1 speakers. I would use the CMSS-3D Surround for the Stereo Envelopment at 50% so the music I listen to would come out of all the speakers. :p
