Every time I play Thief there's always the one thing that bothers me and that's the riddle of the Eight Old Men in the Mages Tower mission to retrieve the Earth talisman.
Let's not beat about the bush, it's "six" not "seven". Logically if you're "turning away from the hand with the sword" you would start counting from the first talisman on the left of the doorway - that makes the real Earth talisman number six, not seven.
Anyway, I want to edit that text so it says "six" instead of "seven" so the next time I play Thief I won't die picking all the wrong talismans again because I've forgotten which one it is. I understand the file containing that text is M16Reward but where is that?

It's in a file called Books.crf. You can open that with 7Zip. Within that file you'll see some language subfolders, each with its own copy of M16Reward.str. That can be edited with any text editor.
Once you've finished you can update the file in the .crf or save it to path_to_TG_folder\books\english\M16Reward.str

Actually, the riddle is correct as it is. Turning left from the doorway you come in, counting all talismans you pass, the seventh one is the true talisman.
You are probably not counting this one on the wall near the stairwell:

Wouldn't that still make the readable incorrect? It should read "Nine men up in a tower..."

I don't have that extra one in my version. I have the 8 pedestals with 8 things that might be a talisman.

Interesting, I think the extra talisman pictured above was added in the T2 conversion of Mages Towers done by Belboz. Never noticed it before.

I suppose so, it is not there on my unmodded Thief install. Apologies for not doing my research. For some reason, I do not ever remember encountering this issue when I played the original game.

Yeah, that talisman belongs only to the Thief2 version of The Mage Towers, dated 12th May 2003, size 12744 KB
It is not in the Thief Gold game.

I wonder why Belboz decided to do that.

I'm guessing it was his attempt to "fix" the puzzle, as jax64 mentioned above. It's actually pretty clever way to do it, by putting one of the Talismans on the inside of the room when all the others are on the outer wall.
