I'm buying myself a spangley new PC and a copy of Doom 3 for you-know-what, but it's way too early to even think about what kind of PC is needed for Thief 4.

They're not "screwing with us" so much as trying to give the impression they're "on our side", so that if they do mess the game up, we'll look at it in a slightly more forgiving light. Also, no publicity is bad publicity - 100 threads of frenzied anticipation and 100 threads of disgusted vitriol are much the same to games journalists and PR people; it's still generating interest.

I'm on a laptop that can run Doom 3 quite well, but Tears of Saint Lucia takes about 20 minutes to load. :(

Remember Eidos is advertising for ~ 40 or so new hires just for Thief 4 & think we also need to remember the business side of this. In the end - Eidos is a business after all - which will have a very large capital expenditure at start up
(and have to pay people for 2 + years) w/o any revenue until it's released.
They also will have a marketing plan from inception to release on 1. what info is to be released and 2. when & think we need to understand that as well. I posted this elsewhere, but think Tim Stellmach's
(Project Lead T2) comments illuminate that point:

"And it's worth noting that, careful as I tried to be, I was taken to task more than once for some piece of information that I either actually posted or (more often) was attributed to me or exaggerated from something I had actually said. So I'm sympathetic to Warren's (and Emil's) position here. As soon as an imbroglio like this starts, you have to be very careful about what you say."They also will & should from a biz perspective look at the marketplace and try to figure out how to get the broadest audience to purchase it. This of course will & should include consoles
(even though people like myself only buy PC titles) - as the PC sales figures/research I've seen recently is that they're only around 25% of the total sales for most cross platform titles.
Yes, we all want our input to be heard & think they will definitely look here
(and maybe not say so) just because the fan base that has been here for all this time. Now, if they make a Tombraider 12 with Garrett game
(or something not very true to the game's roots) - I would guess its going to backfire on them & they understand that as well.
I have to believe however, that those who will design the game will be fans
(and possibly some of our own FM designers from here - ie Purah for TDS) that played 1 & 2 and thus, want to be true to the series - even at the expense of possibly some marketeers in Eidos that may want to take it a different route. This however, is the very legitimate discussion going on here I believe - as to will they be true to the franchise.
IMO, the best thing for the gaming business would have been if Looking GLass Studios was still around and didn't have to close for financial reasons. That being said - the ex-LGSers going all over the business has extremely helped deliver to us some awesome games as well - but no telling what they could have created if they had survived as a company.
As far as TDS - I guess I'm tainted in my opinion in that Randy Smith was the lead and ex-LGSer & thus, I would have bought it even if I thought it sucked
(which I didn't think so). But, I would also guestimate TDS came close to just breaking even for the money they spent to develop it & thus, are very pleasantly surprised and thankful Eidos is even creating a Thief 4 that we can play. :thumb:
Just IMHO, remember they have a ways to go before one room brush is built - so I just hope it's stays constructive and we
(myself included here) don't get so ramped up in suggestions/requests/demands that they then pull back
(rightly or wrongly) from the community.

Exactly why we express concern (and they are very aware of it, and consider it normal). If they made a game for profit only, they could make a game that excludes many of us and still potentially make a killing. We would be hurt (to varying degrees from "oh well" to outrage) more than they. I think an unpopular game will backfire on them, but not a good game that happens to be mis-titled "Thief."

Another thing that made me cautious about the input we will have on the game is the eidos forum. They created threads about things they should already know about .... even in the early stages of development...
Some standard threads were created (introductions, game history etc) in readiness for membership activity and a few other common topics (weapons, characters, thoughts and wishes for T4 etc) were added to encourage discussion in one dedicated thread, rather than everyone posting up individual threads that discussed the same things.
All the threads were intended to be
'newbie-friendly' too; it is a fresh Eidos forum and some members who join up may not know anything (or everything) about the game series.
Hope that explains. :)
