I can see that nobody has had any trouble getting the gate into the lava area open - but I do.. :erg: There's two gates on the first floor I can't open as well...
On the second floor there are two banners in the ceiling that I can shoot an arrow into, but I can't get a rope arrow to extend a rope for me to climb up there. Found the way down to the first floor - but alas - running in circles.
Anybody got a hint for where I should go please?
Goodness me, I've tried opening the gate to the lava 3 times! now it opened - this is all rather confusing for me.... :laff: Fun it is anyways :cheeky:

It would help if you stated what mission you are playing, where you are, what you have tried to do, and what is the specific problem. If you were playing on your own, you would not even know about a lava area.;)
I am thinking you may be in mission #2. If so, [SPOILER]Have you flipped the switch behind the cross? Then go outside again and look for an open door leading you into another building. That door was opened by the cross switch. If you can't go back outside, then that problem is addressed above in discussion about the wall safe. [/SPOILER]

Oh but I would know of the lava area if I stood right in front if it wouldn't I ;) I do not find much pleasure in playing a mission using the postings here as a walkthrough if that's what you meant :p
As I said, tried opeing the gate to the lava area 3 times, coming back again again after looking for switches and giving up. (even tried stacking boxes to get up to the banners in the ceiling :sweat: ) Suddenly it worked, and I'm now on mission 3.

I have been wandering around this city forever there is a few lockcd doors I cant get in
[SPOILER]but I did find the switch behind the bar[/SPOILER] but it just goes ware I have already been, I am getting noware. There ia one place I think I need to go.[SPOILER]I am speaking of the three switches in the room underwater. From Left to right the first one is the Blue lights on the ceiling going down to the room the second I havent figured out yet and the third brings me to my question. I know it opens a the first of three grids along the bank at the top. My problem is I cant get in. I try to crouch but I cant in water and have tried to many times[/SPOILER] Please help if you can. There is also a Jail like door in one of the bars and one in a room with a guard that has some stairs on the other side and I only have one red key and my picks. Hmmmmmmmmm

You said you couldn't find the gate "into" the lava, implying you had not been to the lava area yet. I think you may have meant the gate "from" the lava to the exit. Yes, that switch, like many in the mission, needs to be frobbed twice. Anyway, I am glad you found it. :)

I enjoyed the original Elevator, and quite a lot of the rest of JIS' work - sure, it isn't "classic" Thief, but that doesn't mean it isn't entertaining. I'm looking forward to this, but I can't get it right now (I try and avoid using BitTorrent, if possible, since I have problems with it. I think it's my firewall, I have to mess around with the settings for quite a while to get it to work, and I can't disable it) maybe later in the week.
On the subject of the Japanese FM community, I have found the best way to find out about it was to check the readmes of the missions. JIS has his own website (
http://www.thiefjapan.com) here, I believe. There also seemed to be a community website of sorts called (
http://www.keeper-house.com) Keeper House. As you can see, it now brings you to what looks like a Japanese hosting service, suggesting that the site has been shut down or somesuch, but once upon a time it functioned. I visited once, out of curiosity. They had reasonably up to date news, Thief-related links (The Circle, TTLG, TUG, Thievery, Ion Storm, Eidos etc.) a discussion forum (which was active, although not nearly as active as TTLG, I would guess about 50 regular members) and a small FM archive, which contained most of the Japanese missions I've seen and a couple whose names I did not recognize. ThiefJapan also ran a Thievery server for a time.
As to the question about how big it is, I would say it isn't. Certainly not anything like the popularity of Final Fantasy. I got the impression that there was maybe a hundred people in all, maybe a little more, into it over there. Of course, there could conceivably be a whole culture that we are totally unaware of, but I would think that unlikely. Some people would have heard something, surely. Maybe smithpd or someone could try and ask JIS-san about it, I don't know.
Anyway, that's all I was able to find. I'm glad to see some people are enjoying the mission(s).

OK guys, help again please. We are in an area where there 3 bots who can't see or hear. We opened the big door in front of them, walked past them into a hall with a big door on either end of a long hall but no apparent way to open them. Where did I miss the switch?

On Transiency level, regarding grid gate and small underwater opening....
[SPOILER]I got inside that one grid gate once it was down. Just stand on the gate and "stoop" then swim in. Although I've been able to get in I can't find what to do once inside[/SPOILER]

The game wont let me crouch to get in the grate...Im screwd :( This isnt fun any more...I have whasted about 3 hours just trying to get in that grate that the underwater switch opens. When I stand in the metal plank and try to crouch it is a no go. You cant crouch in water over your head. I know I have to get in there. Someone please tell me I dont becauseI am about to give up.
Well I guess Ill go play some Half Life mods and check back in a bit to see if anyone has an answer.
