-M Yes. That one is embedded in my brain because it took me a long time to find.
Find the passage next to the spider cave that has wood planks blocking one side. There is a switch button in there near the floor. Hit it. Then go inside the spider cave and run around, avoiding the spiders, hitting all four of the pedestal switches. I am not sure that all are necessary, but it works to do all. After that, find a switch up high on the right hand side of the right hand pillar, looking into the spider room. Hit that switch, and you are transported up to the beams above the lava entry portal. Take a rope down, go up the passage to the main lava area. A switch has opened up allowing you to open the door to the lava room. Jump on the trunk, plant a rope in the ceiling to get out of there. Jump to a side platform, then go up and out of the main lava area. You will later find a door that has been opened that allows you to proceed. I forget the details of that.
You may not be able to do all that running in the spider room without being bit. It helps to run outside the spider cave and lead a spider parade around the adjoining area, then run back in and do some more business.
EDIT: I left out a step, confusing two lava areas. Fixed now. :)

In Expert I lost half my health points.
Thank you smithpd! I can't wait to try that tonight!
I'd pushed the button and toggled the four switches, but have been running around like a maniac to find out WHAT exactly changed! Discovered you could sink a rope arrow anywhere into the wall/ceiling/central pillar where the spiders are, but it doesn't do much except leave you dangling with four angry spiders hopping below you
Just to clarify - the only pillars I can think of are at the back of the open area that leads to the two tunnels which lead to the spiders. Or do you mean one of the tunnels, the ones separated by the unbreakable boards?
Cheers!

Melissa,
The one switch you are missing is on one of the pillars (or is it a tree, can't remember) in the same room as the four switches. It's the pillar/tree that is on the right as you face the room with four switches and is on the right hand side of that pillar/tree up high. I was able to jump up and push it. It will then transport you back to the room with ropes hanging over the well of lava. I don't think there is any particular order to hitting the switches

We are in an area just after the big room that has a chair and two tables and a man slumped in the chair, also 2 ghost swordsmen patrolling. There was a note under the table from "JIS" and a tree beast appeared after reading it. While running from the tree beast we found some fire arrows and shot the tree beast. This transported us to a small room, a larger room with a couch and a hallway with 3 pews and 3 windows above and a metal door that can't be opened because we don't have any lockpicks and can't find the key or anything else to do. There is a small dark hall wiith a half circle metal grating and no ladder to go down and you die if you go off the metal grating. HELP!!!

I remember that area and it seems that I used a fire arrow on a door. I'm going to have to try and see if I have that level saved just to go back in and verify if that is indeed how to open the door
Heh, that was my major obstacle and was really getting tired of hearing myself go AAAURG!!! SPLAT! ANd the ghosts heckling me in the background as my eyesight looses consiousness! crack! splat! getup Garret! getup! Give me 50cc of health potion Bud!
Oh no, your not breathing! Theres a thief in the house! Dead i tell ya!
The best way I found to approach this without loosing ANY health is this:
#1 crouch down right in front of the water hatch.
#2 make sure you are really close to that fast moving water shoot!
#3 take out your bow with a water arrow and aim it as if your going to stick it in the water shoot! pointing it towards the shoots opening. AWrg!
#4 CREEP in & go forward using the "CREEP and Forward commands on yur keyboard and just as you continue through press the down arrow with your bow and arrow pulled back readied in hand and its AWAY YOU GO ending with a little bump in the AIR when you land.
I guess you can go in backwards but theres enough backstabbing going on in this game!
would you really want to?:weird:
Anyways the ole' readied bow and arrow creep worked for this THIEF!
I hope someone answers Lynx67's question on that room you end up in with no equipment and a steal door thats locked cuz its a LONG WAY DOWN from that IRON GRID!
A Fire Arrow's the ticket for that metal door. Just BTW, that's the metal door that was beside the cedar chest that disappeared and opened a hatch in the floor where you started your trek through this level. You're almost there. If you used all three Fire Arrows on the TreeBeast then I don't know any other way. I've have anywhere from one to three Fire Arrows needed to kill that TreeBeast.
Melissa,
Devorgilla has it right. I had forgotten that the pillar had bark on it. ;)
dealasteal,
What an ingenious method to avoid damage in the water cannon! How did you think of that?
I guess it is the fact that with weapon drawn the Dark engine makes you move more slowly. Actually, if the rules of aerodynamics held, I think that presenting a bigger area to the moving water would cause you to accelerate faster, go higher, and take more damage. :)
Can someone tell me what the

opens? Thanks.
