No, you can't do it without having both lockpicks. The lockpicks can be found early in the mission, say, whithin the first 30 minutes out of more than 4 hours game time (it is really huge). The spider and the zombie did not fight one another when I was playing it. I am guessing you made some noise somewhere that stirred things up. I think you need to reload from an earlier save, or (maybe better) to restart the mission, and approach the area (or the entire mission) with more stealth. Try to avoid running around, a lot of sword fights, guard's yelling, etc. It is possible to get through there with sneaking and a BJ and no alerts of guards. If you can arrive at the well cleanly, then
drop down into the well as quietly as you can and stay in the shadow. The spider should not alert. If you can do this, then kill the spider with a broadhead before grabbing the lock pick and lock-picking your way out of the door. It's tough enough down there without having to contend with a spider.
I should warn you that this particular mission has a problem with choppy frame rate late in the game. I think it is caused by bad information that accumulates in save files. The only way I found to avoid unbearable choppiness at the end was to avoid reloading save games whenever possible, i.e., to play as close to "iron man" as possible. It can't hurt to save often as a precaution - just don't reload often from successive saves, i.e., avoid compounding, particularly near the end.

I had a zombie-spider fight (both zombies went after the spider, in fact), although there was no crash. I was playing Hard instead of Expert, so if you were on Expert you might want to try that.
On the other hand, I vaguely suspect the reason for differences in play has to do with the memory on the computer, the saving phenomenon also relating to that (that is, the save files aren't 'corrupted' per se, but the computer memory gets strained at some point).

I don't think computer memory has anything to do with it. I have 512 MB, which is more than enough for Thief in all normal play. It is not a memory leak, because quitting thief, rebooting, and restarting where I left off does not make it better. I checked the memory while playing a very choppy portion, and the total allocated was only about 200 MB (using windows 2000, with other things running. So I had about 300 MB left over. Thief was taking only about 100 MB. And, as I have said before, running through the mission avoiding reloads from saves in the chapel area made it play much better. A final piece of evidence is that when I load one of the save games after it becomes choppy, it takes a very long time, say a minute. Usually a reload takes a few seconds at most. Yet the save file size is normal. It is not disk activity. This makes me think that something bad in the save file is giving the dark engine trouble - the software can't cope with the file. So I have a direct correlation of bad frame rates with save games, and there is no information at all to indicate it is memory related.

I had this problem in the first mission of the Ruins of Originia series. (right from the beginning, nothing special to cause it, all the way through playing.) However I had no lag in the game itself, except for a few seconds after loading a save file.
Here's another question: which version of Windows are you using? I am using 98.
I've been having zero problems with Elevator so far, but being able to knock everyone out/kill everyone may also help. I may stick with Hard for Men's Tale, also -- that was the other one causing technical problems, yes?
What I'm most looking forward to with Thief 3 is having bugs like this worked out :cheeky: -- and replaced by new ones.

jbd,
I am using Windows 2000. I suspect this problem may be system dependent, because not everybody has it.
There are 2 ways to reach the cells..I found one thru a long tunnel off one of the buildings but the easiest is thru the Tavern use the switch behind the bar which opens the door leading into the tunnel.
Look for another switch at the end of the tunnel which opens the wall and inside that room frob the skull to open another hole in the other wall.
Sorry, I guess I am so tired that I don´t see it; where can I find another hole having rubbed the skull?

EMT2 - Expert
Just killed the treebeast and transported to the hallway with the door at the end. I have NO fire arrows. Am I screwed?

I came back and restarted the mission, this time on expert, and what do you know, I had no problems whatsoever with mission 2, no choppiness, nothing, and I wasn't even trying to limit my savegames, quicksave or quickloads:confused:
I must have played on hard or normal the first time around, can't remember which, but I remember BJing everybody with no mission fail, and killing the mages too. Maybe the skill level too has something to do with the problems people have been having...? I mean, there might be something screwy with the game on other skill settings and savegames get corrupted more easily if you play on normal or hard, but not on expert...?
Anyway, this is one of the scariest missions I've played, just like the original Elevator mission. I don't know why, but there's just something creepy and menacing about it, like your'e waiting for something really bad to happen ...:ebil:

That's not it. I got severe choppiness on Expert. There is evidently some other cause that we don't know about. Glad you enjoyed it.:)
