Well, finally finished Men's Tale! Had to restart it and reduce the number of saves I did (probably 6 total). Not to mention dying or falling to the fire burrick's area a dozen times or so total before successfully
getting onto the railing at the elevated lava.
:erm:
But, never saw a water cannon/chute, so never had to get hurt by it! Whaddup wit dat? :weird: I saw a door that had water sounds behind it, near the fire skeleton/holy water font, but could never find a way to open it, which wasn't necessary anyway. Did that get you to it?
Anyhow, in the house area at the end, found the
note on the ceiling and grabbed it, which wouldn't go into inventory,
and that gave me the ol' "Mission Complete", with the first objective "Soreha Rokuninno Monogatarideatta" checked, and the other four failed. Was there a way to
slide open the nearly-invisible brick-wall doors blocking the window in that same room, or is it speculated that that was just to keep you from going into that large outdoor area with a couple of citizen AI's,
standing near a gazebo or whatever in an large outside courtyard (one that was seen earlier from another area)?

While totally lost in the Virtue mission I came across a Thief Deadly Shadows painting on a wall on the first floor. Next door was a copy of a game mag with TDS on the cover too. About the only interesting things I noticed in this mission before giving up out of total frustration........ :p

Crowemagnon- How did you miss the water cannon? I quit completely not too long after it. It shoots you into the cathedral with a couple thieves patrol
and a sleeping thing on a throne that turns into a treebeast (or something like that)
I just got fed up with trying to be killed non-stop with no real motivation to continue...I mean, even if there was a kidnapped fairy princess at the end, it would be SOMETHING to keep me going.

Thanx for replying. Naw, what you describe is in the 8th mission, The Last Of, near the end. You frob the
book/note/whatever under the throne with the slouched one aboard, and the treebeast appears behind you...
And I think you teleport into that room, anyhow, like your travel is thru most of that mission... The water cannon's in #9, Men's Tale, or so I hear... ;)
Butyaknow...you DO remind me of something...in #8 Last Of...
'Member where you
get teleported into an area with two high balconies and the courtyard area way below in between with several square pools down there, elevators on each side, a servant girl on the balcony where you begin, and ape-like men beasties number 1 and 2 to take you down? To escape that area, you had to get back near where one of them was standing (the other one was up on the other balcony), and squat low and enter water area, which took you upward... well, for me, that's all I know about it, because it resulted in a *teleport* for me, and the room where you describe might have been the destination for that, I don't remember...plus, those thieves were for show only and totally ignored you...
I wonder if that's *the* water cannon and I got fluked...

Ah! If that's the 'water-cannon' then I have yet to see it. :)
You're right- I did read something before the tree chased me all over hell. And since I kept landing to my death till I adjusted my trajectory, I thought this was the 'dangerous cannon'.
I still have to play the last mission tho and see what it's like. Peter Smith seemed to enjoy it so it should be good. It will be a few weeks since I'm back to Thief Gold FM's while I await my next betatest.

I am in the sub base. I made it into a room with shallow/cold water that sucks away your health. I cannot go anywhere in here. what do I do?
thanks (easy setting)
nevermind, was able to mantle onto balcony and take out the mech priest, by standing on the railing just right without falling into the frigid water below. Finished and enjoying next mission in this pack.

I hate this FM, and I feel bad for saying that because I am perfectly aware that JIS spent months or years of his own time working on it.
Even using "lockcheat" you still have to resort to CTRL ALT SHIFT END because Japanese logic obviously is not the same as Western logic.
The environments are empty, dull, and largely unpopulated, there is sod all loot, and the design is occasionally so badly optimised that it overwhelms the poor Dark Engine.
As I have to rely on a friend to send me the FM's on a CD, I feel that it was 135mb wasted that would have been much better spent on 4 or 5 smaller FM's of higher quality, size is obviously not everything (in this case at least).

I tried playing this FM about 1 1/2 years ago. It got so choppy on "A Doubtful Corridor" that I couldn't continue. I haven't made any hardware changes since then, but I tried it out again a few days ago and it's playing fine now. Weird. I wonder if it was just something simple like leaving a live bat behind or something of that nature causing the slowdown. I killed the bats this time. I've changed video card drivers since then so maybe that was the issue. 'Will never know I guess.
While playing this FM, I discovered a very tricky, life saving move that requires precise timing. I had climbed up to a high position outside the mansion in "Virtue" by
firing a rope arrow into a small wooden square at the edge of a balcony.
I foolishly retrieved my arrow and found that I should have left it there in hopes of climbing back down it. While leaning out, I could not get an arrow to stick again. I can't believe I never tried this before after playing hundreds of FMs, but I lined up with the target spot, crouched, and crept backwards off the edge with my bow drawn. Just as I began to fall, I released the arrow at just the right moment into the
small wood square
and thereby grabbing it immediately, stopping my fall. Then I was able to pluck the arrow and fall only a short distance with no damage. I was stoked.
Has anyone else ever done this?
