EPIC MICKEY: Unfairly Maligned or Failed Wii Product of Spector's? - by Men-E More

I know it has been awhile since Epic Mickey has last been released, but I still remember how pretty unkind a lot of the best critics were towards the game. Even Yahtzee, a big Deus Ex fan, criticized EM ruthlessly (yet humorously), first of all because he didn't think it was as dark as it was marketed to be, secondly for the Super Mario 64-like camera system, and thirdly because he thought the turning the villains into good people with ink was more evil than the thinner option because it took away the target's freewill. I rather interpreted the use of point to convert the bad creatures was, in away, an homage to the use of tranquilizer darts and non-lethal force to pacify to enemy so that there would be no unnecessary casualties, but I see his point.
Warren Spector in an interview claimed that his camera system was arranged as it was so that players could determine how to properly survey and jump in their environment. It's all good, except that it appears that Spector and team are used to a different camera system than other players. The game does have a centering button, but the camera still maintains in angles while I was playing. Personally, I think that the best third-person camera systems come from Shiny Entertainment's Sacrifice, which can be moved at any point the player desires.
I feel bad for Spector that his first major contribution to the Wii system and Disney games didn't meet similar praise as System Shock and Deus Ex. I'm curious to see how EM 2 will improve upon the first game. I recently came across news from The Escapist that Spector is asking fans to help him to convince Disney to produce an HD remake of EM for Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, so perhaps this may be his opportunity to improve the gameplay mechanics of the original EM.
What could have Spector done to have made EM better? Did it deserve its criticism? How did the TTLG forums receive it?

Until you stop typing game names in ALL CAPS I'm not going to give a shit.

I don't have a Wii so I don't know or care too much about the first one, but I hear the sequel is coming to PC. The coop gameplay could well be good in a Trine-ish sorta way. I might pick it up in a Steam sale somewhere down the road.

Sorry, dethtoll. I'll go for italics instead, or nothing at all. It just helps to emphasize game titles while writing posts. I didn't think that there were really enough game titles capitalized in the post to give anyone a headache, but I might as well avoid caps just to avoid becoming one of the many casualties on your death toll. No need to fry my neural interface over the caps.

I'm just going to say it. Are you a marketing bot?

So why haven't you don't it yet?

Guys I'm having trouble telling COKE apart from PEPSI could you write like 500 words each summing up your personal feelings about what makes PEPSI taste different?

You guys realize why we don't get a lot of new members on this forum don't you? This guy comes in here and makes a long post about one of Spector's less talked about games and all he gets in return is a bunch of people bitching about the fact that he capitalized titles instead of italicizing them.

We have to have standards dammit.

The only people I know who played it are "real life" people and they all seemed to think it was great. The stuff I've seen for Epic Mickey 2 has me interested enough that I'll probably pick it up. There haven't been any other games I can think of that managed to capture the spirit of golden age cartoons.
