(EQ) Addiciton is a pain in the... - by LancerChronics

So I was nostalgia-ing. Going around looking at my old MMOs, just for the heck of it, to see where they were at.
And then I ran across (
http://www.tentonhammer.com/node/95371) The Fippy Darkpaw Server". It's time locked.... back in classic EQ, with a community wide vote to advance to some of the better expansions, periodically. (Like every 2-3 months, everyone votes if they want to progress to kunark, then 2-3 months, velious, and so forth).
Now, I'm shaking and itchy all over (totally metaphorically, of course), and constantly swearing under my breathe cause they no longer list the subscription fees on the EQ1 site.
So, anyone know these?
Currently installing the trial hoping that I can bore myself out of it before its too late, but just curious.

I believe it is actually still $15 a month...
Even if it is cheaper, I would bet money it isn't less than $10.

I played on one of the free classic EQ servers for a few days last year. Everything was set back to the way things were in '99-2000, including every unfair advantage and not-working-as-intended bug in all the classes.
...it was actually pretty fun. The pure, unforgiving difficulty is what made it so interesting for me. There weren't any experience giving "yard trash" or whatever the hell they're called walking around. Everything can kill you if you screw up. Nothing is skewed to your advantage, leveling can still take days, dying causes you to lose experience, and you have to sit around for 5 minutes to regain your health after a difficult fight. If you want something, you gotta earn it.
...and I loved it for all those reasons. You get a good group of friends together, and you'll have a blast. Course it's still the same slow as hell experience it was 11 years ago, so your mileage may vary.

yah, just played the trial for a bit. nostalgia out the wazzu. Found out in game it was $15/mo, but really. You'd think for an old mmo they'd decrease the subscription, not increase it. Heck, i'd even be fine if it was still at $10 (Netflix is cheaper).
That being said, was a good experience, and still seriously considering it. Just hate levels 1 and 2 when you have no weapon skill: miss, miss, miss, miss, miss, miss,, hit for 2 dmg, miss, miss, miss, miss, miss, miss.

If the demand is still there, like it is for EQ1 and even Ultima Online, then the fees will remain up there.

I remember being a port of this (Everquest 1) for the PS2! Thanks goodness for the PS2's USB ports for KB+M). Anyway, I wonder if it still works? Probably not, but maybe someone knows?

Well, seeing as you were a port, I'm guessing the guys with the right hardware to turn you on would be able to answer that question.

You could always try (
http://www.project1999.org/) Project 1999 if you want to play old EQ without the monthly fee.
