Morrowind? Wft? Morrowind fits the mold so well what are you people on about?
The OP is pretty much on the money here. I'm sick of Elves and Goblins and Ogres. Let's have some fantasy that doesn't have to have all these races. The Arthurian legends don't have all this nonsense so we don't
need all this stuff. I'd like to see a different take on it all or at least a more "realistic" take. Someone tell me A Game of Thrones doesn't have races and dragons and whatnot in it because the trailers for the new tv show look good so far.

I haven't read any of the Game of Thrones yet, but from what I do know about them, dragons are extinct by the time of the first book, and there are only humans running about.

a novel that is 95% text directly from the game isn't a fanfic, it's a text dump
and i played the game too, why else would i hat^H^H^H^H^H^H
oh for christ's sake pick a target and get it over with
I'm not sure how you'd make a novel with 95% of the text from Planescape in it, unless it was a choose your own adventure.

I said 95% of the text is from the game, not that it's 95% of the text from the game.
I hope that makes sense.

We're going to need a Venn diagram.

There are quite a few games and settings with a twist though. Dark Sun is awesome, as are Planescape and Riftwar. The Witcher setting is also actually quite different from your typical Tolkienesque fantasy. It is mostly based on slavic rather than anglo-saxon mythology, so the underlying philosophy and motifs are quite different.

Aye, and being Polish myself made me appreciate it so much more. But that's also what disappointed me - so much more creative mythos, and you STILL go with the nature loving elves and cave-dwelling dwarves, and the middle-of-the-ground greedy humans? Come on :/

The races are familiar, yes, but their motivations and interactions between them are certainly a fresh take. Colonization, racial tensions, guerilla warfare, even genocide - I'd say Tolkien or most settings based on Tolkien never actually go that far, although certain tensions are often implied. Tolkien and D&D are certainly more happy and fluffy and multikult as far as normal everyday interactions between elves, dwarves and humans go.
